Single Wall Oven Dilemma help needed

In my kitchen renovation I'm trying to decide what to do with the wall oven. A new black electric Frigidaire 27" wall oven came with the house. We don't use the oven too much, usually only to make pizza or maybe a lasagna/casserole type dish once in a while. I am the one who will do more holiday dinners though so I would like something big enough for a 15 lb turkey or double lasagna dishes and big enough for a couple trays of cookies at a time for Christmas. Since I don't cook in the oven that much I want to keep the costs for the oven minimal and splurge elsewhere. A double oven would seem like a waste to me but I'm not sure. Not planning on reselling for about 15 years. What do you all think?

Have you heard about the new "double in a singe space" ge oven??
I'm planning on that one as I rarely need two ovens nor have the space for them.

    Hi,
I am also redoing and trying to figure out whether to do double wall oven or wall oven and built in micro/convection. I do cook a lot and I can tell you that even my old 27" wall oven fits an 18 lb turkey, 2-3 cookie trays etc. I probably use the second oven 4-6 times per year, but it is helpful.

    You can fit a 15lb turkey in a 24" oven. 27" is easy . . .

    (I know from experience . . . )

I should have tried cooking a turkey in the oven before they pulled it out! It's sitting on the dining room floor for now. Maybe it just seemed smaller because it was on the wall rather than in a range. If I use the 27" oven could I get something else besides the micro to complement it?

I did a 23 lb turkey in my 27" GE base model last T day. I couldn't put it in legs first, but it went in. I've gone back and forth on the oven thing and decided to get a cabinet that will hold a 30" when the 27" breaks (although to be honest I haven't found the 27" to be a problem). A countertop convection toaster oven for holidays or good planning or use of the grill outside should cover my very rare need for an additional oven.

On the other hand, a second oven is a good place for potato storage...

Thank you all for your advice. At least I now know that I can cook a large turkey in my 27". Thank you!

I love the look of that double in a single GE oven though. My cabinet guy is waiting for my choice since one cabinet line I may be going with doesn't have the flexibility of a 30" cabinet holding the 27" oven until I upgrade. It looks like it may come down to whether I want to fork over the $2K for the GE.

I was looking at that GE oven/s the other day and I personally would take a pass. The smaller/top oven has a really hard rack to pull out. It takes way more effort than is reasonable and at the same time if you pull it out less or more than 3/4 of the way out it seems to run into the open door.

I showed the salesman who came over to reassure me that it was just me... and then two more who all eventually agreed that it would be awkward if not an actual problem.

Would the black fridgidaire you have now match the rest of the appliances? If it's not old then you could either buy 1) a second wall oven to "stack" for a double oven that cheaper (usually an option) or 2) the fridgidaire version of the micro/convection that is made to stack over the top.

I'm with fori on the idea of having a countertop convection/toaster oven to compliment the 27" wall oven. I just got a Breville convection toaster and it is a pretty amazing little appliance. I actually fit a whole casserole in it, so I think that would be the perfect thing for what you need.

I've been using a 27" wall oven for the past 13 years and I haven't had any trouble fitting a 20+ lb bird in there. I've just gone to something bigger (and convection) because I like to bake and I have 3 teenage (well almost, the youngest is 12) sons and I wanted something a bit more substantial.

Mom had a wonderful old Okeefe & Merit range. Great cooker but the oven was small. So she cooked the bird in a Nesco roaster, freeing up the oven for other stuff. The Nesco does such a great job on turkey that that's what I use now. That is, unless we deep fry the bird.

ci lantro, I've been using a Nesco for over twenty years in addition to my regular oven. I frequently suggest it when threads come up asking what put in a temporary kitchen. Love it! And love cooking outside and on the porch with it too!

Oh, yes, Neesie. When I lived in Oklahoma, I toted the Nesco out on the porch lots of times in the summer to bake a 9 x 13 cake. (I had plans to install an oven out in the garage for summer baking but we moved to the nort'woods before I got around to doing it.) The big Nescoes are great for making crowd-size batches of chili or sloppy joes, too. Also have a couple of the 6 qt. sized Nescoes (they get used a lot) & those are great for pot roast, beans, stew...

Interesting thread. I was thinking that I needed to have 2 ovens because we love roasted veggies but rarely does the main meal's oven temp match the roasted veggie's oven temp. Never occurred to me to think about alternatives such as toaster oven or roaster. However, since I'm also trying to decrease counter clutter, this may put a kink in those plans. I know the roaster wouldn't have to sit out all the time but I'm assuming the toaster oven would.

    Any suggestions?

I was so close to buying the GE double in a single space. I love the concept with the two spaces cooking at different temps and the top one to do pizza in. It's the price that I couldn't deal with right now. I usually get my appliances from the local appliance company so went there today to see what they would do for us. We all went back and forth about the oven and the guy/owner who does all the repairs was a little nervous about the design itself. If there's a problem he's the one that will be coming to fix it. They were actually going to give me a decent price, even much better than HD for it, then I saw the wine fridge which I am planning for in the kitchen. Funny how things turn out. Well, in order to pay for the wine fridge that goes in a cabinet, the choice was made. I got a deal on the floor model of the wine fridge, and I get the plain 30" GE SS wall oven for just about the same price as the double in a single.
Now, if in a couple years I want to change out the 30" I will still have that option. I also got an OTR microwave to use for venting. Now I will have room for a countertop/convection oven if I want that to complement the oven. Thanks so much for the ideas! Woo Hoo! I'm on a roll!

swickbb: great choice. By the way, I only have one oven and usually have to do two turkeys on Thanksgiving. I do one in our roaster oven (like ci lantro and neesie) and one in my regular oven.

    Enjoy the wine...Cheers!
