When was the last time...

...you made a quilt from a pattern in a magazine?

I don't subscribe to any quilt magazines right now and have not for several years. I saw the Dec. Quilter's Newsletter and was really attracted to the cover quilt. I have a bunch of green fabrics and had thought about doing a flower/garden theme quilt with them, and the picture of this quilt just caught my attention so I bought the magazine. It has been awhile since I've used a pattern from a magazine. What about you?

I am making one now from an old QNM (around 2004-2005, I think). They didn't used to have the cover quilt in the magazine; have they changed that policy?

I started a quilt about two years ago from a magazine. I thought it would be great to hand piece and applique the whole thing. Needless to say I am still working on it. But I have used several ideas from magazines. I too am getting away from buying magazines. I think when this subscription ends I'm done.

I have made many quilts over the years from magazine patterns, but only one or two in the last year. Reason being, so many are simply repeats of previous yrs, just different fabrics & different 'authors'. Seems so many quilt patterns must be public domain that this is allowed, because I'm seeing it all the time.
I no longer have subscriptions, just recycle friends' & relatives' when they are finished w/their magazines.

Those are some of the same reasons that I don't get magazines anymore - most of the quilts are repeats in different color schemes. I have to confess that I had been quilting for many years before it registered with my brain that what I was looking at in catalogs and magazines were some basic patterns that just had a different twist on them. I felt so foolish when it clicked one day of, "Oh, that's a jewel box pattern; oh look, that is just an irish chain, oh, and that is a storm at sea!" I'm a little slow at these things! Since then, if I stop to look at a magazine, I just scan through real fast to see if there is any new and different pattern that captures my attention. I did like this one in the Dec. issue since it had the paper-piecing pattern with it. I have an older version of the endless chain pattern, but it uses a different form of construction and this looked easier.

I still get one magazine and share others from friends. I seldom make a pattern there but do get lots of ideas of color schemes. I chart out a block or clip out a little picture now and then and save them on my idea "clothesline". (Teresa is laughing.) One friend gives me a magazine for professional machine quilters that gives me lots of ideas of what I could do if I just practice enough.

    That one looks challenging!

I use some patterns, but mostly buy them for relaxing reading and color stimulation.

The one I still buy is the "Quilt Sampler" that showcases quiltshops and has a pattern from each.

I did stop subscribing years ago. That way I only buy the ones I can peruse to see if I'm interested in any of the patterns. Although I can create without a pattern I do like to follow a well written pattern that includes direction to press, etc. It takes me less time to complete a top if I have good directions.

The last quilt I made was from a magazine pattern that I got the kit for. Everyone that commented on my grands quilt liked that one the best.
I have made several from magazines, some were well writen, some not. I seldom follow them exactly.
I love my magazines....but have to admit they have deteriorated over the years. I have subscribed to Am. Patchwork forever and have all but the first 2. I also get Quilt World reg.. THEN, I usually get a 3rd. that I change when the subscription expires and try a different one.
I go to them first when I am looking for an inspiration.

I have made one quilt from a magazine article. It was the second quilt I ever made and that was six years ago. It was a tumbling block quilt, with Y-seams no less and I was too naive to know any better. I had cut the article out and kept it set aside for at least ten years, maybe fifteen and took it out occasionally to look at it only to tuck it back away. It was on my bucket list to make "A QUILT" sometime in my life. And this was going to be the one. I gave it to my mother, and she got to use shortly before she died.

I counted up how many quilts I've made just yesterday and I just finished #23. Who'd a thunk?
