Ice maker problem

The appliance forum seems to be more about choosing new models, so I'll try here.

My traditional top mounted freezer has an inside ice maker which is not hooked up to water & has never been used.

The other day I noticed a smell of burning plastic & traced it to the freezer. I found that the ice maker had been turned on somehow & the plastic wrap around a pound of hamburger had gotten pulled into the mechanism.

I have not been able to get it out. The owner's manual does not address any situation remotely like this!

The smell is starting to seep into everything in the fridge. I can't tell now if the ice maker is on or off, it is not making any noises, but I can not get it to release that plastic.

Does anyone have any suggestions before I get a repairman out here? It is an 11 year old Kenmore, if that helps to know.
