Help!

Okay, I got this sewing maching for Christmas and I am thrilled but it has been since junior high school (I am 43) since I sewed. I believe I have threaded it with the instructions fine. Thing is...it doesn't seem to want to sew right. Adjusted all tensions in different ways but it doesn't propell..? I am not sure if that is the best way to describe it. I try to move the fabric alone and the needle seems to fight the movement?

Does anyone understand what I mean?

What is it I am not doing?

Or what do I need to do?

what have I forgotten?

Sounds like something is jammed somewhere.....the feed dogs don't want to move the fabric, that is what I gather. Does your manual have a trouble shooting page? They suggest things to try when a problem comes up. Is the tension on the hand wheel not tightened since you wound the bobbin? Is it too tight? Is the fabric too thick. Same weight of thread in the bobbin and on the spool? Is this the first time out of the box for the machine? If you are really having trouble take it back to the store of purchase and ask for help or call them and talk to someone and see what they can suggest before you take the machine into them. If it is the first time you used it be sure to say "I believe I shouldn't have to pay for any servicing as this is a new machine never used." Have a sewing buddy - a friend who sews alot, have them take a look as well. It can be such a simple little thing. It might also help before giving in and shoving the machine back into the closet...call your local library and ask them to find you a book on "sewing machine maintenance"......there are several good ones out. They might have to get one by interlibrary loan but it might offer help to you. Your machine might not be the one in the text but you might find a machine very similar and be able to figure out the problem. Good luck and let us know if you are still having difficulty. Budster

Are the feed dogs in a lowered position?

Sounds like the feed dogs aren't in the up position. Colleen

I agree, sounds like your feed dogs are not in the up position. You may have inadvertently lowered them. They are what feeds your fabric thru.Look in your manual for where it shows how to raise and lower them, then make sure they are in the raised position.

Umm...heh...If "feed dog" is that little lever in the bobbin case area below the plate then yes you are correct. It isn't called that in the manual so I didn't know what you all were talking about. I am sooo embarrassed but you see it has been so long since I have used a sewing machine that I have never had one that did button holes etc... So, yeah, it's working now.
Thanks for your advice. You were all so very helpful
I am blushing beet red now!

Well good thing you had a look and discovered your problem. At least you are sewing again. Do not be afraid to ask questions.....no one looks stupid here...we all learn off each other and there are no stupid questions. All of us are at different levels of sewing but we can all learn from others no matter what level they are at. Can't teach an old dog new tricks, well you can always share new solutions to old tricks around here. Budster.

I think it's great that the problem was so easily solved. I have to admit that it probably took me a year to really get comfortable with my machine. My mom lived down the street and I can't tell you how many times I had to have her come up and rescue me. Now, I see my kids learning to figure out the machines too.

So I finally managed a passable pair of sleep pants without a pattern..yeah me! They are cute. Don't think I would wear them in front of company but they are comfy. Next I will buy a simple pattern. Any suggestions?

Well how great is that......without a pattern no less! As for sewing something next...how about a simple skirt or top...I could suggest lots but the choice is limitless now your first project is done. Take yourself to the fabric store and sit down with some catalogues.....need any new cushions, or placemats? What does your wardrobe need that would be quick and simple....you have cracked the shell and now the oyster is all yours. Way to go!

Rueriddle, the feedog is those little teeth that you see on the machine under where the needle goes up and down. They usually have an up and down position. They move the fabric along. Colleen
