Help, I want to alter my pants

Hi,

IÂm new here. IÂm usually on the quilting forum. I am very comfortable with sewing, due to my quilting, but I donÂt know how to sew clothes.

So here is my situationÂI have some pants that are too big in the waist and rear. IÂd like to try to take them in a bit. I found a few different web sites that describe the process and IÂm ready to give it a go. I figure the worst thing that can happen is that I ruin my pants  but IÂm not wearing them now anyway! And I doubt IÂll ruin them because I can always rip out what I do, right?

Combining the directions from a few different web sites, this is what I plan to do:

1. try on the pants inside out

2. pull at the seam in the back to determine how much to change and pin it (one set of directions say to taper to the crotch area)

3. remove the waistband in the area of the center back seam. Do I also rip out the existing stitches down the back?

4. "iron and pin your desired seams. Though this step can seem like a waste of time, it gives you more professional looking results." What does this mean? Do I just iron the two sides flat? I thought I should have pinned it when I was trying on the pants?

5. Sew your seams loosely and try on for size, rip out seam and resew until it fits.

6. sew again using a tighter stitch

7. then do I cut away the extra fabric? Or do I just leave it?

Am I missing anything?

Thanks,

Lola
