Door repair

Older panel door with solid wood stiles and rails. Deep dog scratches on the vertical stile on the latch side of the door. Then they painted the door. I wish to fill the scratches and paint after the door is smooth, hopefully to conceal the scratches permanently. Filling over the paint means that the filler is bonded only to a coat of paint. My confidence in that is limited. Not sure how filler would bond to the wood after paint remover. I have Minwax "High Performance" wood filler. I note that it is polyester-based. Before I bought it, I was under the impression that it is epoxy-based. Epoxy has about 5 times the bond strength of polyester. Your suggestions for repair of this door?
