This is an attempt to revive an old thread - however Carnivore, I am looking to do something very similar and wondering if you had luck with your project?

I would like to know how they are liking the trim kits also. I'm thinking of buying two single door with bottom freezer refrigerators and would love to have the trim kit to make it look built in.

At the advice of our contractor we ended up putting a piece of matching wood molding along the bottom edge of the cabinet above the fridge, leaving a small gap for air circulation per the fridge manufacturer's specifications. It looks perfectly good that way, and makes it easy to pull the fridge out for maintenance which we've had to do a couple times. In fact the design works so well I never even think about it now -- I'd forgotten I had even considered the ventilation trim piece until I got alerted to your reply to my original question.

Did you verify that a “small gap” for ventilation is within the manufacturer’s specs?
I found this thread because I am looking for same venting option. On all the refrigerators the homeowner researched, all of them require a 2 inch vent space above the refrigerator to not void the warranty.

Here is what I did to address the required vent gap above the refrigerator. I made a 1/2” thick custom inset removable vent panel out of the same maple as the cab doors (with a plunge router).

Another “feature” I included was a full-extension, heavy duty side pullout for cookbooks that took full advantage of the dead space in that otherwise clunky “too-deep” cabinet above the refrigerator, leaving a nice, 3-sided, lighted glass door display area for the homeowner’s crystal collection

I got alerted to new comments on this thread I posted 9 years ago. I'm glad to see others found it interesting.

The KitchenAid fridge we bought died after 8 years with a refrigerant leak that was deemed irreparable. I'm glad we didn't spend money on a custom trim piece because we ended up replacing that fridge with a Bosch model that would have required a different trim piece, adding to the aggravation. Leaving a small gap above the fridge worked out fine, and I would not recommend a KitchenAid refrigerator to anyone as 8 years of service for that kind of money is totally unacceptable.
