adding ceiling light in basement

My son has asked me to add a ceiling light in the unfinished basement of his 9 year old home. I have done some wiring in my own basement using a basic house wiring instruction book, and when I had a licensed electrician come out to run some new circuits he checked my work and said it was all OK. This is the situation, there is a 20A (#12 cable) circuit dedicated only to the ceiling lights (6-single socket fixtures) so this would be the 7th fixture on that breaker. He uses 23 watt screw-in flourescent bulbs that supposedly give 100w lighting. My question, is it OK to simply run a 12' leg over to a new fixture from an existing fixture and terminate it at that point, or should I run it as a continous circuit from the existing fixture through the new fixture and on to the next one in the line? Also, if it's OK to just run a leg over to the new fixture is there an acceptable way to make the 3-wire connections at the existing fixture without pigtails? I sometimes have a problem getting strong, tight connections when connecting more than 2 hard wires in one wire nut, so I would like to avoid 3-wire pigtails if possible. But I suppose that's probably the only correct way to do it, right? The fire safety aspect is my first priority. Any suggestions?
