outdoor lighting Problem

I posted on the lighting forum, and also thought to post here.

I have to lamps posted each on a pillar at the front of my diveway. They turn on and off automatically by a sensor. I seem to be going thru a lot of light bulbs in one of the lamps. Sometimes the light bulbs pop. Can anyone give a hit as to what is going on? and how I can fix the problem? I brushed out any debris that I could, thinking that maybe this was the cause. I changed out two light bulbs within the last two days. Mary

too bright a bulb....maybe try a cfl...

Probably a faulty lamp holder, that's causing the bulbs to overheat - any evidence of heat damage to the contacts?

If the light bulb is breaking likely water is getting in and dripping on the bulbs.

The lamp has a pretty tight cover, I don't think that rain is dripping on the bulbs. How do I tell if there is heat damage to the contacts? The bulbs I use are 40 watt. I really don't want to use cfl bulbs, to bright white to me. Thank you for your help, Mary
