Mud ring beneath drywall?

Hello everyone,

This may be a silly question, but better safe then sorry:

I have a 4x4 square junction box attached to a studded wall that will be drywalled. I also have what was referred to as a mud ring in the store: it's a 4x4 cover with a single gang opening cut in the middle of it. I would like to install a standard receptacle in this opening.

My question is: since the opening is smaller then the 4x4 plate itself - does the whole plate have to be exposed when the drywall goes on, or just the opening? If I drywall and leave only the opening, the rest of the plate will become in-accessable, but you can still get the contents of the box.

Thanks for any information!
