Update! Refinished table done! Pics!

As some may recall, I've been slowly trying to figure out updates for our living room, dining room and kitchen. We've bought and returned several different table and chairs sets. Either we weren't happy with the quality or the set just didn't feel right in the space. After a lot of frustration, I finally decided that I was going to make our original 20 year old table work. It had been through the ringer and had no chairs. Here's before and after shots along with the cabinet I picked up at a consignment store. It took 3 rounds of sanding and staining to get it right, but now, I'm really happy with the way it turned out.

In a couple of weeks we're expanding the window in the kitchen, removing that odd corner cabinet facing the table, adding a backsplash as well as more lighting and a new chandi. I can't wait until I can paint, put up curtains and add accessories! (oh and I think I may have DH talked into at least gel staining the cabinets so we can loose the honey oak!)

New hutch and material I'm going to use for curtains & new table runner

It looks so much fresher! Congrats ;)

You have done a wonderful job! What a great transformation. Do you mind telling me what finish paint you used for the table and cabinet. By that, I mean did you use eggshell satin, semi-gloss, etc. I'm about to do something similar to that in my own kitchen. I will be repainting my chairs, as well as a built-in china cabinet. Thanks!

Wow - it looks great! I really like the dark stained tabletop with the white base.

Hi Stargirl, thanks! I can't take credit for painting the cabinet, that was done by the consignment store. I followed their lead though and used the same paint sheen and color for the table. It's Behr's Ultra Paint (Cottage White) in Eggshell.

It really does look great. I especially love the chairs- the back is so graceful looking. The hutch is gorgeous!

    Brava!!!!!!

Thanks everyone! After so many trial and errors, I am really happy it's done and we can move on to the next part.

Juddgirl2 - I loved the hutch you did so much, it's fabulous and confirmed my thoughts about going used and possibly refinishing it was the way to go! I just lucked out that one I found and wanted was painted.

Val - Yup, most of the chairs I liked were yellow not cream. A friend urged me to try these. They're sold at several places but I got them from Kohl's because of their easy return policy. I couldn't believe it when they arrived, the color is a spot on match with the hutch and the seats match our flooring perfectly! Got to love that!!!

Oooooo.. very nice! The "new" table looks sharp! I like those chairs with it too. Can't wait to see the rest come about!

Wow...you took what you had an made it all work...fantastic look. I love the fabric too. You are going to have a wonderful fresh new space. c

Fabulous! Really love the backs on the chairs, and you did a great job with the table. Timely for me as I have almost the exact problem. Our cabinets have been refinished from clear varnished maple to sort of chestnut/cognac color. The table currently has a white base and a top of light wood. The chairs are a similar light wood and none of it looks good with the now richer wood tone of the cabinets. I was thinking of staining the top darker and repainting the base and the chairs a soft white with a bit of glazing. Now I know how great it can look! The cottage white is a nice color. We used it in our other house for all our trim. I really like the hutch too, it adds a really nice touch to the space.

The fabric is lovely. If you wouldn't mind telling, I'd love to know where you got it.

Congratulations on a great table makeover. Looking foreward to seeing the kitchen when you get done with it.

Wonderful redo and I love the fabric, too. Can't wait to see the whole transformation!
    Viva "Frintage" Deedee!

Lukkiirish, you did a great job! The fabric is great too! What did you use for the stain? I really like how it's dark but not overwhelmingly so.

Amazing transformation! Great job. You came up with just the right solution!

Let me guess, that's General Finishes Java Stain...? I'm convinced now that Every household should have a can of that miraculous mixture on hand.

Beautiful chairs, runner & fabric too!

YES!!! Viva Frintage!!! DeeDee, I think you've found the perfect name for the reviving of loved pieces! Got to love it! LOL!!

AnnaC54 - If your table is made of Parawood aka Rubberwood it can be a tricky wood when it comes to stains and refinishing. During my research, I read that it's known to blotch and resist the stains because of the way it's pretreated by Manufactures. Before you start sanding, try to figure out what type of wood your table & chairs are made of. And be sure to do a test run with your stain on the underside so you know how your top will react to the stain.

I really lucked out with the fabric. Found it at Joann's a year or so ago on their clearance table and knew instantly it belonged in our dining room and kitchen. I got 7 yards for 14.00! I love this fabric and budget wise it's been my best find yet!

Memazz: I used the walnut color by Minwax stain and General Finishes poly in a satin finish. I didn't care for the Antique Walnut color by General Finishes and the Poly by Minwax is a quick dry that clouded. You can find General Finishes products at most unfinished furniture stores.

Thanks everyone, I love these chairs too, I'm so glad I took my friends advise and tried them out!

Thanks! No, it's Walnut by Minwax. I tried the Antique Walnut by General Finishes but liked the tone of the Minwax better. The Poly is General Finishes though!!!

    Looks great!!!

Is there anything so wonderful as having it all come together so perfectly? I think not.

and, Kohls? Really? That would never have entered my mind.

Thanks for the stain/poly info. I'll probably end up with a gel stain on the table top. Good to know about the Minwax poly being cloudy. Learned plenty about blotching refinishing a whole kitchen full of maple :) Will definitely do tests on the underside of the table.

The chairs are getting painted, so the wood doesn't matter. They are ladderbacks with upholstered seats.

How great is it when you get a great deal on something you really love? Well, I'll just keep looking for a similar fabric. Thanks

Love what you've done, good job and I'm drooling over your fabric, can you tell me the name of it and where you purchased it?

DeeDee! You are such a hoot! I am LMAO! I love it! Ha! I think it should be declared a new style! Don't you?

Thanks Yayagal, I got it from the clearance rack at Joann's. Two dollars a yard.

I was just there again today looking for something I could pair this with and they have a couple of different prints that are similar. They're in the upholstery section on bolts w/a 45 nap.

Looks great! Now I want a hutch too.

I love the floors and I love how you stained the table and chairs to match! Perfect job!

Love what you have done! Can I come over for coffee?

Thanks again everyone for the kind feedback, I really appreciate it. I've found a second print to go with my fabric (a soft green gingham) and now it's curtains for me!

Chiming in w/my very first post here. :) I'm also in the process of updating my dining room. Our oak wood dining set is 26 years old. I considered refinishing it - and would've stained the top and painted bottom black, but the chairs are pretty beat up and I figured after 26 years, it would be okay to buy a new set. :) Love your hutch w/the table set and your fabric is lovely! Can't wait to see your curtains. My drapery fabric is due to arrive today and I am so excited to then be able to choose a paint color. I am finally done prepping my walls after taking 2 weeks to remove floor to ceiling wallpaper from my dining room, foyer and hallway. (ugh!) Once my drapes are done, I plan to convert a low dresser (an old family piece) into a server for my dining room. Love this site and all of the tips and inspiration here. Thanks for the pics! patti
