1) read "wiring simplified"
2)turn off the power at the panel (leave the light on to tell)
3) pay attention when disconnecting the wires
4) reconnect in the exact same order

Mounting a new fixture is something just about anyone should be able to to. Make sure the new fixture is listed for outdoor use, and check out "wiring simplified" as suggested above. Normally its just white to white, black to black, green/bare to green/bare wire. Of course make sure power is off at the breaker, not just the switch controlling the light.

The most important thing is that the connections are secure. Read up on using wirenuts to make connections. Maybe even get a few scrap pieces of wire and a few wire nuts and practice making tight, secure connections. The wirenut shoule firmly twisted on, and no bare wire should be visible past the bottom of the wirenut. Gently tug on each wire; if they come loose redo the connection using a new wirenut. Taping the wirenut isn't necessary.

You also want to make sure the connections are in a box of some kind. A lot of times outside light fixtures are screwed right to the house siding. In this case you need to install some type of box to be safe and legal.
