What color are your walls and furniture? Room darkening drapes usually are sold by singular panels. Then when evening comes you pull them closed. I didn't want the problems of doing that so I used Duette linen blinds and Country curtains drapes with a valence, I put a Walmart darkening shade under the valence so when evening comes, I roll the darkening shade right over the Duette blinds and they go up and hide under the valence in the day time.

I would just buy a room darkening roller shade and mount it to the top of the window. That way you can leave the curtains alone and just use the shades for darkening and privacy.
