need some color advice please. :)

OK so I'm happy with all of the colors we have picked for our first house except for the color for our living room. I was going for something more classy and subtle and ended up with hmm...SUNSHINE! hahaha :) Obviously I didn't understand how the yellow would look brighter on the walls and intensify. Also, the room at the moment is very dark. There is one large window, but there is no overhead light at the moment and so we will be using lamps to light the place up.

Here are the two rooms that you can see from the living room. (these pictures are during renovations so sorry if they seem well..unfinished!)

here is looking into the front living room from the back of the house. As you can see it's the first room you walk in to from the front door. Then you walk through the kitchen/dining area that is a warm gray. The room in the back of the house is the den which is the blue/green color.

This is the room I was kinda using as inspiration for our front living room. We have a dark brown sofa for that room and a wing chair that we will be slip covering. We haven't bought that slipcover material yet so I'm open for suggestions.

Soo....any color suggestions would be greatly appreciated it. I'm not sure if the color in the inspiration picture would even work with the other colors I've picked...but I would like something along those lines that would. I love the color story in that room.

Thanks for any help and suggestions! :D We plan to go buy more paint this weekend so we can repaint before decorating for Christmas :D

It is a bit bright in comparison to the other colors. Have you tried Restoration Hardware's Latte? It's a warm creamy gold, but goes well with the other color's you've got going which remind me of RH flax and silver sage.

If you don't have RH nearby, Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams can do the RH colors on their computer in their paint.

A golder paint color that is soft and just a beautiful color is Pittsfield Buff from Benjamin Moore.

The colour on the walls of your inspiration picture look (on my monitor) rather like the Benjamin Moore Monroe Bisque that I have in my home.

Will you show us the finished rooms? They will be lovely, I'm sure.

You're right, it doesn't really flow with the other colors you've used. Why not use the same color warm gray or blue in there. I don't normaly think every room has to be the same color, but when you can see all three rooms at once, I'd rather not see three different colors.

There is no gold in Latte. I have it in two rooms. It is a taupe with green undertones. RH Butter or Saffron are nice muted yellows. Saffron has more brown in it and always reminds me of the classic "Harvest Gold" from the '70s but with a new attractive name pitched to the color. Yellows always look so bright especially against white woodwork.

Butter Cream and Buttermilk are too pale for this particular room. Creamware has more yellow than either of them but I do not think they make it anymore.

The colors on their site are not true to what you will see in the store due to viewing it on a monitor.

Hmm. Looks like my kitchen color..it is believable buff from Sherwin Williams. I love the color. And it looks so different on the wall as on the strip.
Nice job you are doing with the other colors though.

Thanks for the suggestions! We don't have a Restoration Hardware here anymore. :( It closed and we are very sad about that! LOL

I will have to go check out the other recommendations. I think the thing that surprised me is how different the yellow looked on the wall than on the paint strip. I had heard that yellows were hard to get right, but this is SOOO different. hahha

I will be sure to share "finished" pictures when we are in fact closer to the end. We are still in the unpacking of boxes and trying to find places for things. LOL It's gonna take awhile to get it "decorated". :)

Does anyone have any photographs of any of the colors mentioned above in a room setting?

If you look on the gallery side there's a long post with lots of yellow colors. I tend to think you need something very soft and subdued, as in your inspiration picture, something that isn't really a true yellow but more toned down with gray. That should make the rooms flow more. Your inspiration room is lovely and I would think if you use the decor colors in that room that would make a nice transition to the gray and blue colored rooms you already have.

Oh thank you! I had to idea that there was a thread like that in the gallery! I looked through it and these two colors seem closest to what I'm looking for:

    SW Restrained Gold
    EK Camelhair

Anyone have any hands on experience with these colors and are they as understated yet beautiful as they appear in the pictures? I don't want something that JUMPS at you. I want something with the grey undertone to tie it in with the rest of the house. The accessories will tie in the other rooms even more so, but I realize that the wall color is a major player.

ok I'm about to sound like a total novice (which I am ahhaha) I'm searching all over but I can't figure out what EK stands for. I know SW is Sherman Williams. BM is Benjamin Moore. EK I can't figure out! :) THanks. :D

BTW. Last time I checked RH will ship the paint right to you. Convenient! The colors are premixed. They will also send you color chips for free if you call them and ask.

    * I have RH Butter in my dark, windowless, tiny foyer but no digital camera. It wouldn't make a difference anyway since I have oak woodwork and olive green tiles on the floor. The yellow would look totally different with white against it.

Restrained Gold is very pretty but where I am it takes on more of a butternut squash/marigold tone (esp in artificial lighting).

SW Blonde is a bit lighter and very close to your inspiration photo once it's on the walls; many many posters have used it successfully. Though it's a yellowish tan on the chip, Blonde's more of a muted antique gold sort of shade that will work well with your blue and *should* be ok with your kitchen's warm grey, though of course I'd test it out.

I used a local line's color that is pretty much dead-on for Blonde in two places -- office and dark hallway:

Just to show you how much it can shift in apppearance,
here's a shot I took in the same room at the same time on a late fall day:

Normally it's much closer to the way it appears in the hallway and as it looks by the bookshelves, but admittedly full sun or artifical light calls out more of a bright gold tone.

Good luck with the hunt -- your place is looking good so far!

Thanks so much everyone! We are gonna go look at paint samples this weekend and see what we can come up with. I'll share what we end up with once we figure it out. :D The hunt is always the hardest part - but once we find the right color I know things are going to fall into place. :) I really appreciate all of the suggestions and pictures! :)

Rhapsdy, I posted a thread awhile ago with pics of my foyer, great room and hallways newly painted restrained gold. Hope this helps.
