Pictures? How large is your space?
Most commonly you would do dark granite for contrast, but light might work better in a small dark space.

You really have limitless possibilities. I strongly suggest going to local yards and see what calls to you. we can name stones but the varieties you have available and the lot of any particular granite can vary greatly.

Keep in mind your natural light. I just changed my countertops to cosmic black granite from white (original and dull looking). It surprises me every morning when I enter the kitchen that I need to turn the lights on. My kitchen faces west so the lack of natural light in the morning throws me off. It will take a couple of weeks and I will get used to it but I didn't think it would make that big of a difference. I love the little bit of shine factor that I never had before.

Green soap stone? St Cecilia, Giallo ornamental (dark) Venitian Gold? Youn need to decide on if you want lots of movement (Bianco Antico) No movement (Uba Tuba, Peacock Verde)Next, color. Beige, brown, green? Look on the finished Kitchen Blog at the granite list. This will be a good jumping off point for you.
I agree with the above posters. Lighting is everything and with your cabinets, you have multiple ways to go.

Thanks for all of your postings. I have a small kitchen (about 10'x10') which gets lots of light from a greenhouse window and skylight. I would like a granite that works with my house color scheme of greens, burgundy and golds. Kashmir Gold and Millenium Cream are too close to my cabinets but are along the lines of what I am looking for. I would like a bit of movement but not too crazy. I saw a sample of "River Gold" (not golden river, different stone). I loved it but it was priced at $120 a square foot, installed. Yikes! I also love Costa Esmerelda but not sure if it works with beech cabinets. At this point, those are the only 2 stones that jump out at me. Too many choices, I guess. Anyway, any suggestions please. I have visited multiple granite yards. IRG will probably be the next stop.

I was going to suggest visiting yards also. Ask them to show you the lower price slabs if that's a concern. Costa Esmerelda would be beautiful in your space but its on the pricier side also. Have fun looking!

BTW - not to confuse you, but what do you plan for the backsplash?

DH and I just visited a stone yard this morning and had fun looking at all the slabs. We're not doing granite on our new kitchen, but if we were, we'd pick Starry Night. It was GORGEOUS - dark and shimmery, no crazy movement but streaks of minerals stretching across the stone. It had dark silver, dark moss, even dark gold... Just amazing. Do check it out!

With your kitchen colors and lighting, you have many, many options that would look great. Really, your decision is based on what you like.

Budget: the stone yards we visited had three price levels: Medium, High and Exotic (you don't want to know). Similar to Starbucks sizing, that really translates to Low, Medium, High.

We chose Sienna Bordeaux, aka Typhoon Bordeaux, which has a lot of movement. It was the one that really pulled us, although we looked at a lot of slabs at two large stone yards. Our colors are different from yours -- maple cabinets with a stain close to a light/medium cherry shade. We generally gravitate to golds and reds, and both are in the Typhoon Bordeaux, with a creamy background. Our granite will be installed this Thursday -- can't wait!

I agree with others, go to the stone yards, best if you have samples of your cabinets & flooring. You can't really get a sense of the granite from a small sample or a photo.

I agree; look at slabs. What you like in a small piece might be completely different than what you like on a large piece, and things look different in pictures than they do in person. I didn't like any granite I saw until I went and looked at whole slabs today. Then, things I thought I disliked had new appeal. I even took some samples to compare with my wood and lighting in my house.
