Paint everything, including the floor and countertops. There are products for each of these that will give you instant improvement. If you want to replace door hardware, fill holes before painting. Research "cottage kitchen" photos on the web for cheery color combos. Have fun with this, paint can be done over.

I agree that paint will be your good friend. Painting the wall and cabinets will make that floor look much better (it doesn't look like it is in bad shape) if you choose colors carefully. POssibly something else you can do is: cut apart ab inexpensive a book of floral drawings and paste the pages onto the walls (inexpensive "wallpaper" that looks very cottage-y). Oh, and changing the curtains will help tons.

What's under the vinyl? You could paint the slab or plywood subfloor also.

What about anyone in the church who is good with stencils or other crafts? You can really do a lot with faux finishes.

You can buy inexpensive wood trim to apply to the doors before painting to create a raised panel look.

Wall colors like peach, tangerine and salmon would go with the existing floor. Cabinets could be some shade of off-white. Table and chairs could be delft or periwinkle blue if you're daring.

If you're in a moderately wealthy area, let folks who are remodeling their kitchens and tossing their old cabinets, that you might be interested in them.

If that's old vinyl or linoleum (I can't tell), you could install peel/stick tiles. There are ones out there that look pretty good. If it's tile - then you are stuck with it unless you demo it out so the painting the floor idea someone else suggested is really a good idea. If you really can't deal with painting the floor, then two large outdoor sisal-look rugs will lighten the room up, cover the floor in large areas - and be kitchen-use friendly.

Your wall color and countertops seem really neutral - that's a great thing!

Paint the cabinets a cheery warm white or bright white, whatever floats your boat. Change out the hardware - but I think that iron hardware is really cute, actually! If you can afford to and you're allowed to - maybe change the faucet. Replace that yellow light fixture over the sink with a really inexpensive one - even an inexpensive outdoor iron fixture (flush mount) would look good if you keep the iron pulls on the cabinets. Cottagey!!

Also, I'd take down that curtain and get a nice looking bamboo or natural shade from Target or Walmart - one that you can raise and not block that nice foresty view you have. :)

Lastly - if the table and chairs are yours, I might spray paint them black and then rub them with sandpaper to antique them. My friend did this with different chairs she found at Goodwill and put them in her $50,000 kitchen around a farm table and it looks like a magazine, seriously. She didn't even sand the chairs before spray painting....

Your kitchen really does have possibilities.
