The chairs right next to each other doesn't look good or fit the entry way as you said, when on that side, they look good on the angle, but yes the room could be a tic bigger to arrange it properly with room all around, as you said you could use them in another area of the house. If you haven't tried it you could try angling both the sofas and the chairs with a generous round coffee table in something clear and metalish not chunky or white. It could give you more room because of the shape of the room, albeit not a traditional set up. It's a bit more of a boho modern styling placement. Nice just below mid height built-ins would look great flanking either side of the fireplace :)

This is such a great space! My suggestion would be to see how the chairs look near the entry. Maybe move the mirrored chest to under the window next to the fireplace. And if that looks good maybe consider getting another mirrored chest to make it symmetrical. Best of luck!

Beautiful furniture and room, but agree there are one too many chairs. You could also get by with just the two sofas if you want to move both chairs to another room. I don't think you'll ever find a satisfactory arrangement with all of it in the same room.

Love the room and colours on the walls are awesome. I also do agree that there is currently too many chairs, so consider 1 couch and 2 chairs or only the 2 couches. If you do decide to remove both chairs the other one can be sent to me..........

Thanks, everyone! We still have a home office to do and our bedroom in similar colors, so I will move at least one of the chairs there when we can. But thanks for your kind offers to take them off my hands :). It's a shame because they are gorgeous, and I'd hoped to get enough seating for at least three couples in the room, but am happy to have something beautiful for another part of my home, too.

That's great. I don't like any room crowded, but this is such a pretty room with such nice furniture, it's really worth getting it just right. The good news is you won't have to spend money to do so and it sounds like you will have a nice home for the extra chair or chairs.

You have wonderful taste, I think the room is complete without the chairs and then you have a great start for your other rooms.

We have two sofas facing each other in our living space with no chairs and company gravitates to that room. Your sofas will accommodate 3 couples. And most the time.. You are probably gathered in the kitchen!

Okay, I'm updating today. It's still a major work in progress, but we have added a few things. We still have both chairs in here for now pending an upstairs flooring project this summer and/or us getting to our office at some point this century. As of now, our large artwork is centered over the couch. If we move couch toward fireplace on that wall, we'll have to move it accordingly. I have one more thing for room now (other than wanting to bring in some more green/life than just the tiny terrarium). It's an antique mirrored ledge- 24"- from West Elm. I had been thinking of putting between the windows when I ordered, but it's deeper than I expected. I could put next to big painting (behind chair) or on wall across doorway to mirrored chest (which is bare). Thoughts??

Oops, I realized I forgot to attach a picture of other wall I was considering for ledge. Just ignore my little photo-bomber! Also looking for taller/different lamp for mirrored chest. That one is going upstairs as soon as I find a good one for the living room.

Shelly- the dark wall is Benjamin Moore Evening Dove, and I believe the lighter walls are BM November Skies. (It is a color on the same paint chip as Evening Dove, but about two shades lighter). Avery- Thanks so much. Yep, that's the one! Bought months ago on a whim when I had a big West Elm coupon, but it just arrived this week. I only looked at the length, but not the depth, so I wasn't expecting to be quite as substantial as it is, although I think that is a good thing. I also need help trying to figure out how high to hang it (assuming we do).

So would painting sit on ledge? and if the one above is not yours, please show pic.

I think the room has improved wonderfully, but can still be made better.

If it was hung above the chair, I feel like that may detract attention away from your beautiful painting.

I misunderstood, no, don't put shelf on blank wall to the left it throws off the balance with the floor lamp. Above mirrored chest with painting on top. Leave that other wall blank until you remove the chairs. It will be too cluttered if you squeeze it in there. If the sofas are moved down after chairs are removed, then you can consider something there, but I would prioritize a size table.

Are you suggesting potted plants? What kind and where?

This room does not need much. No more accessories, Less is more.

Avery- Yes, I was originally going to put the two pictures next to the fireplace on that wall, but they seemed too big, and I liked being able to see them from the hallway/ dining room/ staircase, too. The ledge would be on the wall parallel to the mirrored chest, so facing towards the fireplace wall and not the front door/window wall.

Our posts crossed, Ramona. By green, I meant either a potted plant in the corner to the right of the fireplace (once the chairs are gone) or switching something out for a bowl of hedge apples or some other springy/mossy green accents since there aren't any pops of color in the room and now that it's spring I was feeling more colorful than typical. :) Do you think floor lamp is helpful? It's a holdover from the prior room, which I still liked (actually, I've had it since 1998, I think), so just kept it in there to have something in that corner.

I don’t know if this will work, but have you tried pulling the rug, two sofas and now round ottoman further from fp, and then putting 2 chairs facing each other directly in front of fp, leaving room for maybe a small shared ottoman in between? Not the best pic, but just for reference…

You hardly need help! Pretty room. You may not want to hear this, but I think you have two too many chairs in this room. Two sofas, the round coffee table is enough. I would put matching chests under each window. But, I have a feeling you may need more seating and that is why you have two other chairs? While the mirror is pretty and it works, I would have opted for an artwork here. It would be an entrance eye candy. I love your carpet and geometric painting. Have you tried that painting over fireplace?

I don't like the lavender wall color with the color of drapes. That brown/gold goes with the carpet and round wood coffee table but I don't see where it ties into anything else in the room. Brown, gray and gold work together well. But the lavender wall color and the drape color needs to be tied into the pillows I think or other art in order to work. My opinion. Just putting it out there. I think a gray would've been a better choice for the drapes. 3 colors should be max in a room. Maybe if you get the color of your drapes in your pillows and some art it will come together.

The room is just too small to handle two full sofas and two large scale chairs. It looks off balance to have the seating crammed in front of, rather than aligned with the two windows. Lovely stuff but an over-stuffed look. Centering art over a couch that isn't centered is throwing off more of the natural balance in your small room. I believe the mirrored chest is too small scale, although it is eating into the doorway where is is placed by the entry. I would opt to take the chairs and chest to the master or other room in the house. Add a pair of larger scale chests (25% wider than the small windows) or mirrored console tables flanking the FP, but only if they allow you to center the couches to align with the windows. If that would cause more crowding, you might consider waiting another 3 months for a second ledge and using them flanking the FP with something interesting on top. Measure the windows and the ledge to see if that is a possibility. I'd want them to be wider than the windows for balance. I think with two sofas, both have access to the coffee table, so consider removing all the side tables and using only one floor lamp. You might enjoy an arc lamp that would hover from one corner above the coffee table. Removal of the tables and lamps will open the space for you.

use the chairs somewhere else. the room is beautiful, but too much furniture. You could add a couple of pouffs for additional seating.

A standing lamp in one corner and the mirrored table with a lamp in the other corner under the small windows visible on far wall when you enter the room, would add to balancing this room. Notice how these examples show balance on far walls.

I think the shelf is beautiful, but I don't think this room needs it. I don't think you need to buy a thing more but removing a few things (like the chairs) will be very helpful. I'm fine with the mirrored chest as is, once the chairs are gone and the sofas are moved toward the fireplace so they are centered on the windows. I very much agree that less is more and you have beautiful things, but there are too many of those beautiful things in this room. I also have thought the wall color and drapes might compete.

By the way, the new coffee table sure looks nice!

ideaplace222 that color is not lavender although lavender is appropriate here or elsewhere. color choices are taste choices. personally, I think the walls in this room are beautifully deep and soothing.

For the newbies: we have had several long discussions about the chairs, where to put them and how there is too much furniture in the room; however, for now, they need to stay although they will be moved at some point.

I also love the coffee table.

I purchased this lovely dried piece and highly recommend it for quality. It might go on your mirrored shelf. Good pricing too.

p.s I like your floor lamp, but it doesn't seem placed correctly either from a design perspective or to shed light on sofa for reading. maybe when chairs are gone it can be moved, or can you move it forward now?

I am not going to get into a fight here. The original poster made it clear this was not a lavender color. It is a deep grey blue. I was responding to several different comments, not just yours. Because the thread has already accepted the color of the walls, I don't think it is appropriate, especially without reading this thread, to ask the poster to go in a completely different direction.

Hi Betsy! I love your pieces and like this arrangement (above) the best. I would separate the chairs about a foot more to allow for a walkway (at least 30" total walkway if possible). With your round coffee table then centered in the middle, to be functional for all seating. Do you have a table to compliment the one to the left of the fireplace that would balance the other side? I think this is a great space for gathering and can't wait to see what it looks like with all your wall art!

Ramona, I also mentioned removing the chairs today and I made the same comment at the top of the thread. They could always be placed in a store room until the other rooms are ready for them. I really don't think anyone was being rude, but rather, just a number of people sharing the same opinion about too much furniture. It really doesn't matter if the wall color is called gray or lavender. If gray, it certainly has strong lavender undertones in some lights, which is not in itself problematic if the things in the room look nice with it. I wouldn't assume we haven't read the thread.

Here's some of the balance issue solved in a small room like yours.

Wow, thanks all! A lot of comments overnight and while I was at work today. Guess it is like the blue/black vs. white/gold dress! :) Walls are definitely blue, but I can see how they look more purply in the pictures, and it's a pretty saturated blue (moreso than I would normally use) with slightly cooler/purple tint. We do have shades of lavender in three other rooms (nursery, laundry and master bath), and this is definitely not it. Also, I tried pure gray drapes first, but the browner gray worked a lot better actually (much to my chagrin since I really loved the gray). It's tough to see in the pictures, but actually the rug, "gray" throws and patterns on the chair are all shades of the same bark gray that match the curtains. Anyway, we unfortunately don't have a storeroom (and had a basement flooding issue), so the chairs are staying until we get our other projects completed and can move them in the summer. Thanks again everyone for your input! Will update when we make some changes.

Betsy, I trust you didn't take offence at my comment. I certainly didn't mean anything in a nasty way. I am not that kind of person. Your design skills are very acute. I said that in my comments to you a few times now. I love everything you did except the choice of drape color for this room and I see what you're trying to do with it. They go perfectly with the carpet but I still don't see that same color in your pillows or artwork--That's all I was pointing out. And as you have now stated the wall color is 'blue'. Well, that's as close to a lavender family as we can get. I wish you the best.

No worries ideaplace or anyone else! That's why I put it out there. And I appreciate the different POVs. And fair point on the art vs wall vs curtains. I think I was planning something different color-wise on the walls back when we ordered it, but I am happy with the art. Will have to think about window treatments in the future, but have limited budget to focus on some other projects now!
