I'm looking at buying a 1937 Tudor-style home and am trying to get some of the reno done before I move my furniture in. The living room and dining are a little dark due to the placement of the windows, proximity of the neighbor's house, and the north-facing exposure. The original oak floors are in great condition and just need to be refinished (likely switching from a carmel/honey-colored stain to a natural, more matte finish in an effort to brighten things up), and I plan to repaint the plaster walls from the yellow-based beige they are now to a cooler shade of light slate gray (again, in hopes of brightening it up and switching to gray-based colors throughout the home). The question is, the wood trim (baseboards, windows/door trims) and the doors themselves should be refinished as well. Do I enamel them white? Or would doing so remove some of the authentic tudor style? They are currently a dark brown, which is pretty, but I think adds to the darkness of the room. FYI, there is also a brick fireplace (painted white) and the trim in the neighboring hallway, main floor bedroom and family room (separate from living room with french pocket doors) already have the white trim/woodwork/doors. The kitchen will be remodeled as soon as I've save up the cash, and I intend to keep as much of the original cabinetry as possible (who has built in flour drawers anymore! so fun!), which is already painted white. The windows in the living and dining room were just replaced but haven't been painted yet.

Thank you for your help! I'm trying to learn as much about this style of home and era before I make any dramatic changes, but it's a slow process - I want to stay true to the original style as much as possible and am a firm believer in keeping as much of the original materials in the house as possible (I'm sure you can't pay for that level of quality any more).
