Okey Dokey here we go...... Got the blue pillow..... “I don’t hate it but I just really really really don’t like it “. It’s too perfect; it’s too coordinated, it's too much blue, it's just too matchy matchy…. (FOR ME). I tried different textures and different shaped blue pillows; still just wasn’t right for me. @The_girl_that_daydreams I took your advice and switched the grey and blue pillow around; added that pop of blue pillow to the other chair as others suggested; which made the flow (blue, grey, blue) and I LOVE IT. The majority may call it odd or off balanced; IT'S OK, I choose to remain in the minority on this one. But thanks for all the feedback; well accept the "Negative Nellies" (is that better Nancy) :-). I have no regrets of posting; I received advice that helped me tweak my room to be better than it was before posting. It's still a work in progress....

Love pic #2! I'm glad you switched places. And I don't like the matching blue at all. Especially if you're going to keep the third one. Too much of a blue line around the room. Amazing how just a tiny tweak makes such a difference!!!

I totally agree that the blue/grey is better than blue/blue (especially now that you reversed the blue and grey pillows). Guess that means I'm keeping my yellow pillow! Yay!

I agree with @tennisanyone in that the 2 matching chairs should be brought in closer to the sofa and facing the sofa. Turn the rug the other way and place part of it under the sofa as long as it's big enough to still accommodate the coffee table. The 2 chairs should be placed the same distance (approximately) from the coffee table as the sofa. This will create a cozy vignette for conversation. Can the recliner be moved to where the 2 chairs were before? Love your chevron patterned curtains... :)

Thanks Angie May Conner; I don't want my chairs essentially in the middle of this very small room ( I think it looks much bigger in the pictures then it is). With the 4 barstools right there it would be too cluttered and the backs of the chairs would be facing the TV. Then the one recliner would be over there facing the back of those two chairs and an empty corner by the fireplace. This room is not large enough for any additionally seating. I guess we all have different visions I like my furniture placement as is. One poster disliked my curtains, you like them (thank you). Sounds like you did not get to read the whole thread; I already moved the rug to run length wise with the sofa, but moved it a little away from the sofa per another posters suggestion and it looked much better then the sofa legs being on it.

Hoh boy.... I had only read a short ways down the thread before commenting. LOL!!! Entertaining read for sure! My apologies if I overstepped by offering the advice on bringing the chairs in closer to the couch. I now understand you are dead set against it. It's hard to tell exactly the size of the room from the pics and if that would even work. I LOVE the way you turned the rug and I love the new addition of the blue pillows :)

As I read this post I have to laugh. Everyone definitely has their OWN opinions and the wording is not always put in the nicest of ways. But...when people enter your home and see it, they are judging just as everyone on the site is, so I think it helps to hear other peoples opinions. It allows you to sit back and really think about what is right in the room and not. If I walked into the room for the first time I would say lovely, you did a great job, a really great job. Upon being in the room for awhile I would probably say "what's up with the pillows." It's not a deal breaker by any means, but if you want it perfect, as many do, then there are certain design rules to follow. I agree with the several posts that state this is not the type of room to mismatch pillows especially because the chairs are side by side and exactly the same. Your room is lovely, but your older and wiser sister is right on this one. You'll get her next time.

Thanks Angie, your advice was very courteous. There is a way to make suggestions without being over bearing, negative, or rude. Some people (not you) think their way or their preference is the Bible of Design. Its ok to have a difference of opinion; its just sometimes how we express it.

psmljj Hmmm is there really a design rule that's right or wrong here on this pillow color matter; For me it is simple you and my sister (well and 100 others on this post) LOL have the same preference? I don't agree with people wearing blue lipstick, you will never see me in it but those who are wearing it are not wrong for choosing to sport it. If there was such a post about this I would never post you are wrong for wearing blue lipstick, even if I believe another color may be more becoming; if she felt like blue was her color and wants to wear it everyday for life, if she is happy in it that's not wrong; our preferences are just different.

"I have to admit now that I see it, I don't like the two blue pillows in the chair as much as I thought I would. Gray pillow I definitely like better. I think switching the pillows then adding the blue pillow in other chair, makes it all flow together nicely. Doesn't it feel good when your idea comes together as you envisioned it??? LOL."

I semi-agree with your sister. If you're going with a solid pillow then i think it should be the lighter color, but it would look best if you had some texture on the chairs since they're already a solid color.

Much cooler with the different pillows. I love it. Tell sis not to be so pedestrian.

I haven't read all the posts, but would you try the patterned pillows from the sofa on the chairs, and the blue ones on the chairs on the sofa? Then repost pic. :)

I have to agree with Bvcx Gtr, but people did go a little to far. She only asked about the pillows and not anything else. I know how it feels when people attack what you like. I love abstract art and sculpture, but many of my dearest friends cannot handle it. Although they have know come to like it after 20+ years. I did not mean to upset tea7779311, if I even did, because your room is beautifully done. But I do still hold there are correct ways and wrong ways of doing things in design. It's not what you choose, but how you place them. But that point could be argued all day. Enjoy your room!

SoCal Contractor, the chairs are not a solid color. They are a pattern. Tea this is what I have been dying to say to you, however have not had a chance until now. I think your problem is not really that your sister criticized you for the mismatched pillow. It is because she criticized you at all. You have ( I think ) too much symmetry all over your room. I like balance, however have a hard time with symmetry. Did that make any sense to anyone?

For me this discussion is closed I've made my final decisions and my sister was converted in the process to come to the grey side..... now its becoming a therapy session that my issue isn't the pillow but the critism..... my goodness .... carry on ...I'm really enjoying these replies I can't wait to see what's next.

Well, in my house the pillows would match, so I agree with your sister, but it's your house......... Then again, I'd probably not have pillows at all, or that size. Or those chairs, in that location, or those screen thingies, and I'd move the rug, too.

Its also funny the majority of people with the unsolicited negative comments of my curtains; my screens; my artwork; my furniture have a picture of everyone else's designs on their page but not their own home. I am sure a great deal of stuff in their homes may not be some peoples preference but I surely am not the type of woman who feels the need to list what I don't like in your house when you never asked. But people are different my mother just raised me differently.

Uh, yeah, she/he did go out of their way to be critical. As you say, everyone is different, and I'd much rather have drapes, chairs, and screens people didn't like than be the kind of person that no one wanted in their home. And I still like the mismatched pillows!

I was hoping that kmkane was just making the obvious point that no one person would choose the exact same items for their home as any other person, no matter how beautiful those items are, or how well placed they are, because everyone has different likes, dislikes...it's just a matter of taste. But I'm afraid that is too generous an interpretation of her comment, which was unnecessarily specific. She could have made that point in a much more generic way if she didn't intend it to be critical of tea's specific choices (which I think are beautiful, fwiw). I'll never understand why people are intentionally unkind, on the internet or elsewhere, but some people just are. Sigh.

Substitute "type" for "speak" -

my point is, if you ask, you're going to get all kinds of answers. You open yourself up to all kinds of thoughts when you ask on an open forum - there are hundreds of thousands of people on here, it's hard to dictate what they say.......

As you can see, you can ask a question about one thing, but of course people are going to notice other things in the room and comment. You can take their thoughts in a positive way, or you can take them in a negative way, or you can ignore them altogether. People are just trying to give you ideas, I don't think people are intentionally trying to insult you, whether they type or speak.

And, yes, the other point I was trying to make is, it's your house, so do what you want. If you love it, then who cares what others think. I may or may not like what you do, you may or may not like what I do, but it doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is if you like it.

It's your house. So what happens if 50 people agree with you about the pillows, and 50 people agree with your sister about the pillows, and no one mentions the other items in your house. You're back to ground zero. No conclusion, no new ideas.

So here's a funny. My sister has frilly cape cod curtains on every window in her house, and no blinds. I have no curtains on any window in my house, and some blinds (and none in my upstairs bathroom, where no one can see in, but it stills drive her to insanity). can you imagine our conversations?

I'm with your sister. But that's just me. Do what makes you happy. But I don't think a small pillow makes for matchy matchy. I think I would move tall screen to another part of room looks to crowded there.

I like the rug centered. Much better. Would love to see those wing back chairs on either side of fireplace. Recliner seems like to much furn for small room. Is this only room with TV?

I like your room, go with what makes you happy, it's your home and you live with it. I don't care for matching items I have two pillow on my chairs that are two tone dark chocolate sofa and tan loveseat pillow have the same colors one on ea side, and some have a pattern on one size. And I love mixing them up too.

I don't think the problem is that the pillows on the wing-back chairs don't match, leaving the pair looking unbalanced. The problem is that the pattern on the lone beige pillow doesn't appear anywhere else in the room. You have a great concept of complimentary patterns in that room, so have some fun with that while constraining your flair just a bit. Pick 2-3 patterns and then constrain the number of colours to 1-3. That way pillows will compliment whatever furniture in the room you set them on.

I still agree with your sister and other comments about balance. Everything else is in balance except the pillows. If you look around your room you'll notice everything else is in balance like the pillows on the couch. They are in perfect balance. Those pillows are not going to make or break the room, but would look much better in one color. I don't think this comes down to personal taste. I think it's comes down to balance, so I would set up a poll and then put it to rest.

This was resolved in January 2015 when I posted this. I never had a Beige pillow. There has never been but 3 colors in the room gray, blue and off white. One pillow in the wing back chair was blue and one was grey. Now its 2 of the same grey pillow that was originally there and 2 smaller blue accent pillows. I was hesitant to respond and post what I ended up doing as not wanting all the OFF TOPIC comments to start again on everything in my room but the pillows. I agree psmljj and I did find a balance that I like and you as well kitchens_ck I agree with what you said. Below are some pics of what I settled on many months ago.

OH YES!!! It looks absolutely beautiful!!!! Perfect! I see now there was only one post recently and not restarted. You had so many posts from the original that it was hard to keep up.

I wouldn't worry about the off topic comments too much. As you've discovered we all have very different tastes and posting on Houzz is like letting anyone in the door and inviting them to critique. It's tough sometimes but you need to just thank everyone for their advice and then sift through for the ideas that suit YOU. BTW, it's my Mom that would have mentioned the pillows so I understand how you were feeling. If I'd run across your post all that time ago I would have advised you to do what you wanted depending on the relationship with with your sister! I see that you've found a compromise (for you) and that you've beautifully resolved any discord those different pillows might have made. The new look is beautiful, injects the right amount of blue and even adds a lushness that only extra pillows can provide.

Beautiful room. The grey, white and blue is very elegant and you have resolved the cushion issue very well. Love your rug but may I suggest that it is a bit small for the area. Could you perhaps purchase a second one just like it and place it up against the existing one, no gap?
