Do you have a home office? Great view

no we haven't set up a home office but that's a good idea. would you put the desk right in front of the window?

I'd be tempted to build a reasonably deep window seat there, flanked by bookcases maybe, so you can sit there, nestled in cushions, read a book, have your coffee while enjoying the sunrise... Just make it an attractive cosy looking space that greets you when you come up the stairs and invites you to have a seat and relax for a bit...

Great ideas. I particularly like the Steve Grambel bench. Great ideas. I'm just starting to dabble more in home projects. Do you feel this is the type of thing one would take on? (I have some resourceful friends for help)

I don't think it's too difficult to create the bench, the woodwork that is (not that I could do it myself, I'm inclined to kill myself when handling a powertool). Sometimes people even use Ikea cabinets. Shouldn't be too difficult to make the seat cushion either. Lots of how-to's for both to be found on the internet.

For some reason I had a feeling that you'd particularly like the Steven Gambrel bench.

The bench is a good idea even if you make a home office here. And no to the desk in front of the window.

No way would either of us give up the desk where we can look out the window, view the rising sun and the birds. In fact when DH retired I feared I might lose my study to him and I was determined "that wouldn't happen. I lobbied for a second computer and he said, "Only if you can tell me where you will put it." I had been thinking about it for a long time. "Ill show you," quickly drawing the existing desk that I had designed with a four foot knee hole, followed by a lg unit in front of the knee hole. "What is that?" "It's a Jack and Jill desk, see we each have a 4' computer desk facing each other, with an "L" of bookshelves and a stack of drawers, file cabinet and the ability to watch the birds at the feeders. Under it is a storage ottoman for resting feet and playing footsie. He had to admit it was perfect and still is, after all these years. Think ahead, good luck and enjoy!

Wow, thank you all. The bench PLUS a scaled down office is starting to sound good. The backyard is full of stellar jays, finches and chickadees right now, so plenty to peek out on.

We have two rooms like that in our 1925 tudorish cottage. One is an office and one is a dressing room. Love your woodwork!

Thanks Shakerjaebs, the woodwork throughout most of the house was one of the features that sole us on the house. The floors mostly don't creak. We just had them refinished and the man told us on the final day "whoever built these floors sure what they were doing". They even put in fleur de lis patterns in each corner of the living room. Some of the window sills have black hard crusty grime on them (sun damage? dirt?)

It's unusual to see seating arrangements where the (comfy) chairs face the window, but that is what I'd do. I don't find window seats comfortable, and nobody I know who has one ever uses it!

A landscape-architect friend told me that when placing outdoor seating, it makes a huge difference to have something behind the seats, like a hedge or fence; it makes one feel safe, instinctively. For that reason, I'd put a folding screen behind the chairs, eg. that's what you'd see when you looked into the room from the hallway. But if it were a nice carved screen, the effect of the light showing through could be really nice.

Can you see Ranier from that window? That would be incredible!

On the other hand, I DO have my computer in front of one of my view windows, and wouldn't have it any other way! But I also wouldn't want it on the third floor, unless I were trying to cut down on time in front of the screen (not a bad idea)!

If you make a window seat in front of the window...make it at least 2 ft. deep to lounge in and accommodate pillows.

Have you ever been in a tent trailer where the daytime bench pulls out into a single bed at night? That would be a nice option for when you have guests.

I'm not facing Mount Rainier but if you get close to the window and look the right, there she is. I have a view of the cascades and over the valley down below us (all residential). It's an interesting observation that most people don't really use their benches. I'm afraid we wouldn't either. iniitally before asking any thoughts on here I pictured two low back sitting chairs with a small end table between them (coffee or wine, right?). We could read, use Ipad, chill, talk on the phone, take in the view. I'll show all this thread to my hubby and see what grabs him.

I know people who do use their window seat, but two chairs with a table will work too of course :-)

Could add soft rug and let kids use it for play space.

If this is adjacent to master bedroom and you need a master closet, I would incorporate this space
