With high CFM comes noise it is a fact. I would remove the cabinet above the stove and put in an actual extractor hood you don't mention how wide the stove is but ideally the fan should be a bit wider than the stove, Usually over the range fand do not come high enough CFM for gas stoves you could also check out pro hoods they have a higher CFM than most.and would go under the cabinet.

Changing to a higher cfm also requires adding additional make up air. Putting the motor outside will also help.

Hi Anne ... We sourced an AEG hood fan recently that provides good suction and reasonable sound levels. It's not cheap though ... And especially if you happen to be in an apartment building there are considerations for make up air as last poster said. That's not to say make up air isn't s factor in other types of home, but apartments have common hallways, etc that have a bigger impact on overall air pressure in a home not to mention strata rules to comply with. Building codes changed on Dec 19th in BC with regard to some aspects of venting so it's a little more complex than it used to be.

Check out Vent-A-Hood...they keep the noise down by using a different type blower and add more motors the more CFM is needed.
