Matching Benjamin Moore and Behr paint colors

My decorator friend lent me her Behr paint swatches but the painter I will most likely use only paints with Benjamin Moore. How do I find the comparable shades from one brand to the other?

Take the Behr swatch to the BM store and have them match it. Any paint company can match another's color.

Yep, they probably already have their competitors formula programmed into the computer.

Do you think I could tell the Behr color names/numbers to painter and have them buy the BM equivalent? Or would they need the actual swatch?

    Just the name and colour.

I've experienced it both ways. I have not been to a BM store in years so I don't know specifically about them.

I would think they could look up the formula but I was buying paint at Menards for a property I am selling and their computer wasn't very sophisticated so I ended up at Home Depot heh.

Call the BM store and see what they say.

Behr has a color scanner to determine color. I mixed bunch of paint that didn't work out to come up with a color for my bedroom, and needed to find what was 2 shades darker for another part of the room so I took my paint stir stick in to be scanned. It was a breeze.

I have tried every company and I have NEVER once been satisfied with their first attempt at matching a competitor's paint color. There are always subtle differences that the computers cannot read and BM uses a totally different type base for paints which also affects the coloration of the paint. Take the swatch with you and work with the store until you get it right. This is not a place I would shortcut on some upfront work - too expensive to repaint.

Home Depot has some Benjamin Moore colors in the database.

As a painting contractor I could never recommend Home Depot to match even their own colors well. If a customer gives me a Berg color for their choice or a Valspar color, I get the chip at Home Depot or Lowe's and take it to my Benjamin Moore dealer to match. The Ben Moore store I use can match any color better than anyone at a big box store.

I told my painter I wanted Benjamin Moore Simply White. He got it mixed as Behr and started painting yesterday. It looks creamy yellow. I painted from my BM sample pot and there is a definite difference. The undertone is all wrong for my white kitchen. I am pretty angry because I went through the trouble of testing at least 8 whites on the wall. Difficult conversation this morning. I don't think they can match.

Thanks for all these comments and feedback. I'm about to go bold and paint one wall of my bathroom Adriatic Sea (BM) and I don't want to mess it up! I was considering seeing if Home Depot could match but now I won't even waste my time. I really want that complexity of color. Plus I'm doing it myself! Money saved already!

If I know I need two coats I will have benjamin moore or Sherwin williams matched at Home Depot and then for the final coat I will get the real thing. Sometimes they are very close but other times they are off.

Beware of doing this. My sister just had her kitchen island painted. The painter was supposed to use BM's Raccoon Fur, a dark gray. Instead, he had it matched in a SW paint, and painted it while they weren't home. It's a deep blue gray. Um, raccoons aren't blue.

That's great! Yes, I agree, sometimes it's nice not to spend so much on paint. I'm glad to hear about this!

We went to Home Depot looking for Benjamin Moore Blue Note not knowing any better. We wanted the paint that day, so we asked if they could color match. The guy was super great, did a sample can, and said they sell clear plastic film to try the color on our wall at home. The color looked good to us, so we went ahead and bought two gallons of behr premium “blue note”. We love love the color in our office (formerly spare room). I guess ignorance is bliss. :)

You are lucky you are choosing a painter who uses quality paint. We had used Behr on our do it yourself projects and didn't know the difference.

We have Sherwin Williams in our area, so I haven't used BM, though I understand that it's excellent. We found that using SW, another great quality paint, makes huge difference in the application and the results.

@partim - I have Ben Moore Raccoon Fur in my living room and it's a dark blue. I say all the time that raccoons aren't blue but my paint is genuine BM. if you look at the swatch you can see the undertone.

But color matching is almost always off

Try using EasyRGB.com - a powerful color search engine. Just type in the name of a paint color you like, select one or more manufacturers, and it creates a list of paint colors with RGB profiles.

@bon ziet That is a fantastic website EasyRGB.com ! I want to use Behr paint which is highly recommended for quality but looking at Ben Moore beautiful colors. I have been agonizing over the perfect shade of white for my exterior and this helps so much. Behr New House White is very close to Ben Moore Atrium White! Not all of the colors from the Behr line show up, I suspect because names change and updates need to be added, still such a great resource. Wow thanks for the hot tip!
