Lighting Design Problem

The ceiling in my dining area has a ~5 foot round recession. There is an electrical box in the center of this recession. Right now there is a round chandelier hanging in the recession.

The problem is that this recessed ceiling and light are not centered over the rectangular dining table (the light is at one end of the table). A round table won't work because then the table will be extended into the hallway next to the dining area.

I could swag the chandelier but it may look strange since the recessed ceiling would still be off center.

What are some options to make this work?

Instead of a chandelier why not use a monorail system that starts at the outlet box and drops down below the domed part with the end of it over at the other end of the table, that way you can hang several colorful pendants off of it over the table!

The only solution that's going to look great is to change your rectangular table for a round one. Otherwise, you're not going to have a balanced looking room. Sorry about that!

Thanks for the response. But as I said a round table is not an option. And I'm not sure what you said is my "only option". I could fill the recess altogether and move the electrical box for example. I think it's about being creative and was hoping to find some of that on this site.

Good point. Here is a picture of the room. As you can see, the recession and light are not centered in the dining area. If the table is centered under the light, it will extend too far into the hallway (unless it is a very small table). The goal is to somehow have the light in the center of the dining area without it looking strange. Difficult I know, but that's why I am here. ; )

I can't get the picture to enlarge so I am guessing at some things that maybe just aren't really there or are different than what I can see.

The room from which the picture is taken is what - living room, dining room?? It appears to have some sort of tray ceiling - is that correct?

Why not create a tray ceiling throughout the kitchen and what appears to be a breakfast area and have the electrical box for the light moved to where you need it. It looks like the cabinets are already mounted under a soffit (??) so this could be done.

yes, the picture is taken from the bay windows in the living room. I could make changes to the ceiling but that would obviously be a more elaborate, expensive option. So I'm first trying to see if I can work with it as is. And sorry about the pic - right now the place is a mess with decorating going on. But here is a close up of the recession and light (light to be replaced).

The monorail idea is interesting. Do you happen to have a picture of the basic idea you are suggesting?

Both pictures show the monorail mounted on a level surface but the standoffs come in different lengths so it is easy to hang them with different sized stems to make it level over your table
