What are you going for? I kinda think this looks rustic lodge, very cozy too. Do you use the fireplace? I had a fireplace similar to this and did a couple of things to make it softer in the room and not so overwhelming. (Mine was pink brick-bleh) So I sponge painted about half the brick a cream & grey color to change up the impression of the color.

I filled the hole (to the left of the firebox) with very neatly stacked, nearly identical sized logs & cut pieces, filled it up completely, very tight and flat on the front.

The mantle is wrong to me. It should either be the same width as the stone or just get rid of it. It could be a lighter color too, if you want a mantle.

There are those who would just paint the whole thing lighter. It might be an idea.

Do you have to have your TV there? It sort of takes away from the statement it makes.

I have a million ideas but it would help if you put up some picks of things you like or would like to adapt.

I love this stone, think it is unusual and special, not your cookie cutter fireplace. Think of it as an asset maybe and see what ideas come.

Thank you for your comment! I was thinking about sponge painting the rocks, like you said, and try to change it up to grayish coloring instead of the orange that mine has. I love having a mantle so I will keep that, but I do want to change it somehow. I just don't know what to do.

I like the idea of changing the rock colors to some that work better for you. The only trick to it is using several colors & shades of colors to make it look real. Keep some of the original. Stone is random, so find a color you like, in a real stone, and copy it. It is the easiest way to make it look natural.

As to the mantle, perhaps you can bulk it up a bit; larger supports, and use the existing mantle as a "layer" if you will. Add another thicker piece of wood, twice as thick and longer with the same stain as what you have. You could also consider adding simple molding to it to do the same thing. Or do both!

To me, the proportion is off. I would use the far left edge of the firewood hole as the line, and make it longer by that much, equal at both edges, if that makes sense.

These are really inexpensive, DIY fixes that will have a big impact.
