Tree id and help saving

Hello, I need help identifying and saving this tree. I belive it's a conifer.
My roommate is leaving for six months and I want to get this beautiful tree back to health. His mother gave it to him 5 years ago. Its sad to see it lose its limbs.
I give it water every two days give it day sunlight. I want to put it out side but im afraid ot will shock it and kill it, I assume its been inside over two years. I live in new Orleans pur climate is humid and hot. Right now is cold! I want to repot it but afraid to. I can tell its been sacrificing its older limbs to grow new ones....

I don't know what kind it is or how to help save it. If anyone can help, I'd rather not have this beautiful tree die.

Norfolk Island Pine? It's a tropical plant, and I wouldn't try to move it outside, even in New Orleans. It can also suffer root-rot if over-watered, so I might let it dry out a bit. I don't know if that's the problem with your tree, though. It doesn't look big enough to have outgrown that pot.

NIPs are very prone to spider mites. They can be rather difficult to make happy if you don't have a handle on the quality and consistency of the potting medium.

You might try posting your concerns in the Houseplant Forum.
