What are your thoughts with this new format?

I am having some difficulty seeing the screen with this new format. There is too much green. I miss the homey feel of GW. I don't find my "clippings" yet. I heard on the kitchen forum that the longer post of the past are no longer available. Such as the great ones that Mongo would post. What purpose is this serving our community?

Weedy, on a Mac there is no spot for "file name" like on a PC. I have been communicating with Buehl, over on an old "New to Kitchens Read This..." thread she has resurrected. Its from several years ago. She is wanting people to bump the thread again as she gets the changes arranged for a new kitchen sticky. I have tried to explain the photobucket issue as well as link problems I am experiencing on my Mac. I am not alone. I am sure it is not user error. It is the interface between Houzz and the Mac OS, I bet.

Man, there's gonna be a learning curve to using this combined site!!

Weedy, from that screenshot it looks like you're uploading the photo to Houzz but just doing it in a different way. On a PC can you actually link to a third-party hosting site and have the photo display without having to upload the photo to Houzz, akin to the old <IMG SRC> method?

Enduring, I have no experience at all with a Mac, so this may be totally wrong, but did you try double clicking on a photo file name in the list of your files that comes up when you hit the photo icon?

Maybe you can answer a nagging question for me, since I have never seen a Mac in real life. Does the apple on the lid really light up, or does it just reflect light really well so that it glows whenever I see one in a film?

The apple on a Mac is lit from behind.

Thanks, Linelle. Was the doubleclick a PC idiom? Or does it work?

On my Chromebook, when I click on the photo icon it takes me to my files list. I clicked on downloads, then selected this one. (Burma) I will now try to see if that will make a viewable photo.

Enduring- I am not familiar with Apple products since my old Apple IIE got replaced, but when you click on the photo icon, does it bring up a page that you can browse on? Can you look for a place where you put the photo that you got from Amazon? Then click on that?

    -Babka

Mongo: no. We need to keep whining till they give us back our HTML-enabling. Till then you're probably right that what the above method does is upload photos elsewhere on the web to houzz. Not really sure why they're so stuck on doing that....

"I am not familiar with Apple products since my old Apple IIE got replaced, but when you click on the photo icon, does it bring up a page that you can browse on? Can you look for a place where you put the photo that you got from Amazon? Then click on that?"

I'm not Enduring, but what you are asking is not possible. You have to select a file that resides on your computer. You can only browse or search, but again, only the files that exist on your computer. There is no way to just fill in a url.

I'm not normally one to dislike change or forum upgrades but I don't like this at all. It makes me not even want to try to learn the new photo system to post my future mb reveal. I want to be able to embed pics from tinypic.com. I don't want to upload from my computer or try to figure out how to post from Houzz and link here. Guh.

Houzz was for looking at pictures. Gardenweb was for learning how to. Combining them just seems like a mistake.

What the heck? I'm not a pro and my user name was itltrot. Definitely not liking my name out there for the world. :(

I guess I misunderstood what Enduring was trying to do. I know that Chromebooks and Macs cannot use the photo link unless the pic is resident on their computer. When she wanted to post a jpeg from Amazon I thought she had downloaded it to her mac. Sorry for the confusion. ;-) Many people run other OS, not Windows, so I'm sure the folks at Houzz are working on fixing that.

    -Babka

Dione- Your "user name" doesn't need to show up in your post. Put the name you want to show the world into the "first name" box in your profile. Also check out the "advanced settings" on your edit profile page.

nancyinmich, Yes, you can double-click and right-click in the Mac world. Means and works the same as with a PC. I was a total PC person and Mac-hater for the longest time. Until I underwent an unexpected conversion. Now I'm religiously Mac.

The problem isn't double-clicking on a photo on our hard drive to upload when Photo is clicked. The issue is being able to insert a photo via a link that is available to PC users but not Mac. It's puzzling this hasn't been addressed in these forums by an Admin or tech person.

    Yes, Linelle, it really is.

Emily Hurley seems to be able to take concerns to the people who need to see them. Lets call her name and ask for her specific help on this. Emily, are you still reading this, and can you help our friends who use Mac systems? They are not getting the box to enter a URL in when they click the Photo icon!

Be advised that they reset my password, I didn't request it, to something incredibly simple, by mistake they say. Easy to be hacked. (Expecting to be banned soon.)

ceezeecz, surely telling us what happened to your password is not a banning offense. Assuming it was a mistake and it's been corrected.

    Hi there,

Apologies if I missed something. Definitely let me know if I did. It looks to me like there is some confusion over what the Photo button is used for. That button is strictly for uploading photos directly to Houzz from your own system only. If you would like to add links to photos that are housed elsewhere, you can do that by clicking the link button to add that link. Since Houzz posts and comments support up to 10 photos per post, that hopefully should address the previous need for using outside services to Houzz your photos. Hope that helps!

Hi All, That would certainly not be a banning offense. I will check out what happened, of course. Remember that you can always reset your password at any time by going to this link: Forgot Password

Babka, debekoboe was clear in explaining my issue. Thanks both of you for your help.

Emily Hurley thanks for checking in. Several points:
1- I just spent 5-10 composing a comment and as I pushed delete to take out a word, I lost the whole post. I have read others losing
2- I would like to be able to post from online sites and not have to down load an online image to my personal computer before I post onto Houzz. I want to be able to use Photobucket. Many GW'ers have been wanting this feature.
3- With the emails that give us notice that there has been a recent post on a thread that we are following, the "see comment" is helpful to see the comment on my computer, but if I click this option on my iPad I go to the beginning of the tread. It is an inconvenience to scroll down through all the post to find the post I'm looking for. I don't know if that is an issue with your system, or just an iPad issue.
    Thank you

Emily, thank you for joining the discussion. I'm on a Mac and having the issue about posting a photo not physically located on my hard drive. While it is true that I can link to a photo stored online (e.g., my own Flickr account), it just shows up as a link. Also, it doesn't just display the photo but puts the viewer right in my Flickr account. It's one thing to go to another site via a link, but people have a low threshold for having to click on a link to see lots of photos. It really doesn't make a thread flow very well.

Enduring, is it possible you had your entire post selected when you hit Delete?

Good points Enduring. I have had that "delete" problem twice. My whole post disappeared when I hit backspace a couple times. Frustrating.

I think the issue of defaulting to the top of the thread when you want to see just the most recent post from your e-mail, happens when someone makes a comment then deletes it. I have seen that a few times. I see the first few lines of the post in my in box e-mail, but it just is not there in that thread any longer, so the program defaults to the top of the post. Perhaps when that happens, things could be tweaked to default to the bottom of the post. It is easier to view just a few comments up from the bottom, rather than scrolling down on a long thread.

    -Babka

Linelle, no I didn't delete the whole post out of error :( it just got funky and took my whole page to the main forum page such as the bathroom forum or the kitchen forum. Like someone pushed the back button. It is very frustrating. This has happened to me 4 or 5 times since the switch. I assumed it was error with new system switch.

Babka, I notice that the "see comment" button in my email takes me to the specific post when I'm on my computer, but that same button takes me to the head of the thread when on my iPad.

Another 2 things, I wished the emails could post the whole post. And I wished that the email notices of post didn't have that wacky text mixed in with the real content. It just takes up room, so even less content is showing up in the email notice. Example:

    "Babka NorCal 9b said:
Good points Enduring. I have had that &quot;delete&quot; problem twice. My whole post disappeared when I hit backspace a couple times. Frustrating...."

I've had emails that have twice the amount of junk text as the one exampled above.

The junk text is the html code (&quot: gets translated into "). It has something to do with or with not having the email sent or received as plain text. Some computer person could explain it better.

I have been pretty frustrated with trying to upload photos here; I've tried various things without success. I'm going to try one more time, but this is just from my desktop, so doesn't yet solve my PB problem.

Hey-it worked! First time, but I did have to resize it down. Let's see if I can submit it successfully now. (and sorry to bore you guys with another of my new MBR photos . . .)

Im back after several years and I hope this new format 'grows on me' I liked the old format better!

Something else I've noticed. Way too often a photo gets posted (usually from an iPad or other tablet) and it displays here sideways or upside down. I understand why that happens and that's not my point here. On the old board you could double-click and the photo would right itself for purposes of a quick view. That doesn't seem to work for me here.

Leela4, Emily Hurley, who seems connected to Houzz, says in her last post that the "photo" function is supposed to just work for posting from our hard drives. She says that we are to use "link" to post from other sites. The "link" function does not post the picture, though, it posts only a hot link to it, which the readers will have to click.

Thanks, Nancy. I did read that above. So does that mean that everyone who has been posting all sorts of pictures both here but even more so on the kitchen forum has been doing it directly from their own computer and not from elsewhere on the web? This speaks to enduring's point #2 above.

I feel like I am both very dense and almost beating a dead horse here to keep harping on this, but I am still unclear. And I assume buehl is still working on it in kitchens as the "posting pictures" part of her "read me first" thread isn't up and current yet.

Emily-if you get around to reading this, please know that we understand that it may take some time to iron all this out, and that we (of the new and old GW gang) appreciate you responding to our questions.

Leela- The folks who have been posting photos from elsewhere on the web are using Windows PCs. Apparently it is not possible to do that with a Chromebook or Macbook at this time. I really do wish that there was an easy to find link up in the toolbar explaining answers to our questions as sometimes it does seem that we are all just flailing away thru trial and error just trying to understand how things work here in our new home. When someone figures out how to do something in Kitchens how will we know if we are here in our Bathroom, or Hosta sites"? Believe me, you are not alone in your frustrations.

Love the new format. And the new site owners!

    Yeah!!!

John - it was so much easier to post on GW and formatting, etc. was consistent. I have encountered so many issues since the takeover that it has become frustrating to post! Inconsistent list formatting (when you can get a list to work!), inconsistent paragraph spacing, text disappearing, links not working for everyone, the list goes on! Not to mention the functionality that we lost (text formatting, various types of lists, etc.) This was supposed to be an upgrade - it's not! I feel like I'm an alpha tester for some primitive product from 10 years ago!

Did you ever visit/post on GardenWeb before the takeover? (User names are no longer reliable.)

John, maybe you can elaborate, what is it about the new format that you love?

I've worked a lot lately with the Link Icon (adding over 70 links to the thread about threads missing content) and it's fussy to use. Sometimes the green bar to allow me to change or remove the link appears, unbidden (no idea why) as I'm trying to add the next link. Lots of trial and error to get it to disappear. I learned I could not ignore it, because it messed up the next link I was trying to add. That is much fussier, and a whole lot slower for me, than simply adding a link by using HTML.

I do miss the ability to use bold and italic fonts with HTML; it's easier to make sure people understand the point you're trying to emphasize, without using CAPS that read like yelling.

Copying and pasting text from another document leads to wonky paragraph spacing. Sometimes I can't predict if I am leaving a space between paragraphs, or not. I just guess, since I can't preview anymore, and then I edit if I have to.

For me, jotting off a quick comment here is probably faster and easier than on GW. But doing a post that is more complicated, with links, and photos in between text, is a lot more tense for me than it used to be on GW...so far, at least.

DH is getting used to me saying bad words at the keyboard.

    Hate it.

Hard to read, because the art dept. has layered it with block and graphics and the text portion doesn't fill most of the screen.

    Especially annoying on tablets !

Well Mr. Whipple up there was badgered on GW because he kept picking a fight with our beloved Mongo on the Bathroom Forums and handing out generally bad advice. Houzz is flashy enough it probably helps to hide his ego.

Picking fights is not my style. Debating proper shower construction is another thing all together.

Hopefully your beloved Mongo can handle another contractor's opinions.

Since I stopped posting on Garden Web I have built another 10 barrier free showers at least and installed over two dozen linear drains. These past years have seen another six of seven steam showers.

These difficult shower builds are the root of my business.

Houzz and now Garden Web are the perfect place to showcase your work and meet new clients. I'm sure once you learn the new platform you will see it is easier to search. Easier to google. And with the SEO team at Houzz the rankings for your old posts will most likely increase.

All good for the people who use these platforms to showcase their work and find new clients. For home owners looking for help their questions will be seen by a larger audience.

Hate the fact that pros bring up old threads simply to advertise and seem to be talking to themselves because they aren't answering recent questions. GW was never about advertising.

Also, not being able to use html/css coding is a pain.

Bill-I didn't want to "like" your comment above based on the fact that I don't really like that FBie like feature here (and I do use FB), but yeah.

I don't think you were regularly around last fall when we finished our MBR, but I couldn't have gone through that whole deal without all the good info you and Mongo have posted on this (old) GW bathroom forum through the years.

So thanks to both you and Mongo for continuing to help.

I do think the search function here will be much better.

"And with the SEO team at Houzz the rankings for your old posts will most likely increase."

Many of our old posts have been terribly damaged by the conversion to Houzz. I'm estimating that over half of the kitchen reveal threads I check have missing content. Possibly 75%. Some reveal threads have lost ***all*** of their photos. Any thread with a lot of content in one post (multiple photos, long text) is at risk for missing content. Some have lost all of the kitchen details. This is not helpful for homeowners looking for help.

We will need to see how Houzz truly reacts to this problem, and how much restoration is possible. Right now, I find it impossible to be optimistic about the future of our old posts, so I had to respond to this comment.

I loved the way Mongo and Bill and others gave us homeowners help on GW. You guys have always been the heart of the forums, helping others for no compensation and being very kind in the process. Here on Houzz, contractors have been known to put up informational articles, then when you ask a specific question, they want a credit card number to discuss your project with you. They want to consult from a continent away, sell you the drain, and you have no way of knowing if they know what they are talking about. It feels sleazy to me. That is why I always returned to the Bathroom forum on THS at GW to ask the technical questions. Informed homeowners and the real pros were generous and helpful. That is the beauty of the web. I trust that you folks will not steer me wrong, because you are not selling me anything. Once you get me started in the right direction, I can speak with some knowledge to the people here in real life and they will treat me with more respect, too. You professionals at THS at GW give us confidence in our ability to hire good pros, as well as do-it-yourself knowledge. You are priceless. Thank you.

Funny thing is I was OFFERED credit card numbers when I was at GW before, and I turned them down, Instead, I requested if they felt they HAD to do something to say thank you, I gave them a website called VestnPDP where they could donate money to pay for police K9 vests. I'm not here to make money. If I were, it'd be a losing proposition. Major big time.

Heck if all you wanna buy is a drain , there a a lot of folks that can do that, and they have pretty pictures and videos too. And you can watch them for free - even if you don't buy their drain.
