Hancock & Moore Utah Sofa - Worth it?

My husband and I are remodeling a farm house and are going for a "rustic chic" look... We came across this Hancock & Moore sofa that is on sale for $6k (normally $14k). I know that's a LOT of money, but I've heard these sofas will last decades and we won't be moving probably ever. We have a 3-year-old, however, and a newborn, and I'm not sure whether leather is the best choice. It seems more durable than cloth, but I know it scratches, too. Anyway, I guess my question is two-fold: For those with little kids, is leather a good choice? Is this particular leather sofa worth the cost considering the brand and reputation?

Unless you are independently wealthy, that is a lot of money sunk into something that may need to be replaced due to damage. Leather is a good idea, but not something that makes you want to put up a rope to keep people out of the space.

it is a lot of money. that said nothing beats leather. scratches mae it more beautiful, s=they can be wiped. they are also sticky in the heat, so beware.

Absolutely beautiful! I think maybe a cheaper one for the next 10 years - say 1/4 that might make you happier with accidental sharpie or scissors - if the money was there I wouldn't fault you though - I love it

If you can legitimately afford it, go for it. And by that I mean that your standard of living won't be impacted by the purchase. You don't want to be sofa rich and cash poor.

I've had my Hancock and Moore leather sofa for over twenty years. As a designer and a homeowner good furniture will pay for itself and is more comfortable. Leather is great and durable. Clients get into trouble with less durable fabrics like silks that may look great in the magazine but if you have young children probably not. Ours is also a fold out bed and it's actually comfortable too. Go for it, just keep playtime with scissors at the table and not on the sofa.

I have an ivory H&M sofa that's still beautiful 5 years later. And, yes, they will mail new cores free to the original owner. Use their recommend products for upkeep so you don't void the warranty.

Hancock and Moore is great leather, but I am iffy on what will come in the future, in terms of support for products bought now or earlier...

I have been through the Hancock & Moore factory in North Carolina....twice, and I believe it was Jim Moore who gave me the tour. These are quality sofas.

Yes but he doesn't own it any more...

That is a beautiful couch. It looks like it can take a lot of abuse from messy children. They all are. If you love it buy it. It will be worth the initial investment and you can be one of those people who says"we have had this couch for 20 years and so many, fill in the blank, children."

Same story here. Have had the sofa for 20 years and now is in my son's home. Keep your receipts and model number. Hopefully the new owners will carry on with replacing parts. Maybe you can get that confirmed before purchasing. Is this a new or used sofa.

I have a sectional that I bought 24 years ago. It looks like the day I bought it and did very little to keep it up. Dusting and once in a while a damp cloth. I try to keep the sun off of it to prevent fading. It has gone through two boys growing up. We didn't allow food in the living room, same with sharp objects. My son is a marine so you know he was your typical boy and more so - still it held up. No rips, no seams coming apart, moving parts still perfectly operational. We almost got rid of it but H & M sent us new insert cushions and filling for the pillow parts and now it looks like new. It is teal in color, not really popular color today, as everything seems to be beige or black in the stores now. I still love it, teal color and all, I was told it would cost me $20,000 to replace it. I now have my sons 65 lb. dog part time, not allowed on couch and still no problems. It is worth every penny I paid for it and more. If you have good leather it is not sticky, hot or cold. If it does those things it is not quality leather or not leather at all.

That's always the question - is it worth the cost. As someone who has had both a cheap couch (college) and a nicer hand me down from a family member down sizing - the much nicer one is significantly better. As we look at replacing that one, I'm looking for something that is going to hold up better - I'm not sure of $20k is in the budget, but I don't see any reason to buy crappy discount couches again. I'd go very classic in the color and style so when you still have it in 20 years and you are replacing the stuffing people can't tell whether you just bought it or not - makes it much more tempting to keep it. The one in the picture is beautiful.

No not worth it! Don't waste your money on Hancock and Moore. Poor quality and no customer service! I purchased two chairs a Greyson recliner and a power recliner. Within 1 year the leather on the Greyson has white spots and the power recliner stop working. The store Meridith O'Donnell will not return my calls or emails and Hancock and Moore told me good luck. At $4,000 a chair I would say sooo not worth it!

Mtlindsey thank you for your post. We are thinking of buying a sofa and chair made by Hannock and Moore. We turned over the chair and it was made with superior quality! The salesman said best company they don't make them like them anymore! Salesman said, Great fantastic warranty fantastic customer service! How could you go wrong? Right??? Then I come across your comments and now we don't know what to do! Is it because their now owned by a different company? Thanks for your post! Looking at their furniture knowing what the salesman told you how great the company was you would never think they treated you like this when you would have a problem. The tags said made in Hickory, NC.

Hancock and Moore is an amazing product. I'm hearing cost is the concern. For those looking for an alternative, consider Bradington Young. The quality achieved at it's price point is excellent. The line is also hand crafted in Hickory & Charlotte NC. I've sourced the product to interior designers for over 10 years.

Thanks for the info about Bradington Young. Just went to Hickory. So many do not use coil springs and I did look at Hancock and Moore.

I have a Hancock and Moore sofa, chair and ottoman that's 26 years old. Looks brand new! Some of the cushions are flattening; haven't called for warranty replacement yet, but was told when purchased that products carry lifetime warranty. I figured any manufacturer with that much confidence in quality and workmanship must be good. Will report back about cushion replacement. My pieces are timeless!

I have a Hancock and Moore yellow leather sofa and recliner. After two years the yellow color on the piping and material on foot rest of the recliner looks like it's just been wiped off. All scratches that have been made on the material is dark underneath. The yellow color did not penetrate. Am I wrong in thinking this shouldn't be? So many here say theirs look brand new after 20 years. It has just been my husband and I using this furniture and I'm just sick that I spent so much money on furniture and I hate to look at it now. H & M was contacted by the furniture store I purchased it through and they say it was my fault, that I must have used some cleaning product to do that kind of damage. For the life of me I can't remember using anything that abrasive. I was under the impression that this was quality and durable fabric. Anyone else had any problems like this? Oh, and H & M will replace all my cushions. All for $500+ more. I feel like I would be throwing money out the window on a product that will just look cheap and shabby again in two more years. I should just give it up I guess and live with it but it sure eats at me that I paid big bucks hoping this would be the last furniture I would have to buy and I've got to just have to look at it until this life is over.

I have had a leather sofa for many years. It looks brand new, still, but we have no children and no pets. When my nieces and nephews visit, I put a soft, oatmeal colored chenille slipcover on it. I like using the slipcover. It is more comfortable to my skin than leather. It doesn’t sweat and isn’t slippery.

When I think of little ones, there is always the risk of felt tip coloring markers, holes poked in the leather from sharp objects (unintentionally). Accidents happen. Children can’t be supervised every moment. Something to think about.

Oddly enough, the only mark on my sofa was caused by an adult relative writing out a list with a blue roller ball ink pen. The pen slipped.

I’m glad I invested in the leather; it has held up well and looks to last for years to come. My brother, with his little ones, bought a cheaper sofa, but it wore out from heavy use after just a short few years.

Do you know what type of leather is on your furniture? There are different types of top grain leathers. Each type has its own characteristics. Three basic ones are Analine (completely unfinished), Semi-Analine (light finish for some protection), and Finished (most finished and protected). Unfinished leathers are selected to show all the natural marks and ppl appreciate how it reacts to use (body contact, pulling, etc). Finished leathers provides the most protection and appropriate for families and high use. Here is a Bradington Young video about leather. The leather type info starts at the 1:43 mark. Hope its informative: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5d8r1XvdeC0

Poor customer service from their dealer. My sofa arrived with a chipped frame and leg completely split down the middle longways and hanging off the frame. Deliver driver showed it to me before even bothering to unload it. I emailed the dealer, Lenore Empire Furniture in Johnson City, TN, that night explaining the sofa had arrived damage. Called the dealer the following afternoon. Sandy responded that she did receive my email but was "too busy taking care of placing other orders to get back." She said they will not "ever credit my card... and will have Hancock and Moore repair the couch and reship it to me." Instead of making a new sofa, they plan to resend me the damaged then repaired sofa. The right thing to do would be for Lenoir Empire to at least apologize for the inconvenience and credit my card; keep the repaired sofa and offer it at a lower price. Why would they want to hold me responsible for their mistake? Heed all the negative reviews. Do not buy from Hancock & Moore or Lenore Empire Furniture in Johnson City, TN.

Three Dogs and A Girl Garden: As one of Hancock & Moore's top dealers nationwide let me explain how things work when you order items long distance. This is how all stores and dealers operate and it makes no difference what the brand is.

    1) The Dealer is the customer of Hancock & Moore. You as the consumer are the customer of the Dealer. Don't fault the maker for issues caused by the Dealer or their chosen delivery service.

    2) The delivery company, whomever they may be, is responsible for the damage. They have a duty to repair or replace the unit if damaged in transit, which is what you experienced. Some delivery companies are better at doing that than others, which is why I recommend all customers use Sun Delivery Service. When they break something, they take responsibility. They are also more expensive than other delivery services, because they are more professional. I have been doing this for 33 years now, and there are some really lousy delivery companies out there. Like in most things, you get what you pay for.

    3) In this industry, very few items are replaced. Most are restored. A split leg, while it looks terrible, is an easy fix and can be restored to like new in most cases without much fanfare. Better delivery companies (such as Sun) have in-house restoration experts that are some of the best I've seen. Only if a piece is beyond restoration does it return to the factory where components are replaced, not repaired. One in a great while, a frame is broken and the piece is salvaged, and a new one has to be made - but that's infrequent.

    4) Every dealer should respond to their customers and assist in the process. When i have situations such as what you are experiencing I make sure the process is moved along and the customer is satisfied with the outcome. The worst part is waiting, because these things can take several weeks.

    5) You ordered from Lenore to save money, that's the only reason anyone generally does order from them (they are not known for their customer service). If you don't agree with the outline (above) you would be better off purchasing locally where the risk of transit damage is considerably less. A local dealer can always service you better because they are local.

When I was about 6 I loved to watch my mom sew and help her. She let me have my own little sewing projects. One day I decided to make something all by myself, drew on my mom's sofa and cut out the cloth so I could make whatever it was I was designing in my little pea brain. My mom was not happy. I might not have been as successful trying to cut leather as I was with her fabric sofa

I’m looking at a Hancock and Moore chair in a Class III unprotected leather. Am I being foolish? No kids, no pets just older grandkids. I do have a sloppy husband but I will use this chair mostly. I just can’t decide if I want the Power Gravity Recliner which is very cool looking but not like the rest of my furniture, or something more classic like a club chair and ottoman. Open for advice. I live near Chicago and am considering ordering from NC.

Hi. I’ve had my Hancock & Moore sofa, chair and ottoman since 1994 purchased on the recommendation of my interior designer...quality and warranty important factors. Our circumstances are similar - no kids or pets and, at that time, young grandchildred. In June 2020, I contacted Hancock & Moore for new cushions & filling which was replaced at no cost to me. My upholsterer could not believe the structural quality of this furniture and the leather is still beautiful today! It was an expensive investment in 1994 and well worth it!

Hancock & Moore is pure quality. Hope this helps!

I've been honored to represent Hancock and Moore for many years. They are indeed one of the best companies you will ever find. The original owners sold a few years ago to Century Furniture who is the largest family owned furniture company in the world. They continue to carry on the legacy of the original owners with the same artisans who hand craft this excellent quality.

We recently gave away our 7 year old fabric Stickley sofa. It had constant use by this retired couple. My wife was on it 10 hours a day. Me, 5 hours a day. The cushions needed replacement. Stickley only has a 5 year warranty on cushion replacement. Our sales rep mentioned that someone came in to order new cushions for their Hancock and Moore sofa. They didn’t buy the sofa there. They were replaced for free, by H&M. If it had been a leather sofa we would have paid to replace the cushions. We replaced it by a less comfiortable but striking looking Stressless loveseat.

We bought a pair of Hancock & Moore leather recliners a year ago. They look beautiful, but after a couple of months started to squeak loudly anytime you make the slightest move. They were sent back to the company — three months later we received two “new” ones and within weeks were having the same problem. Now we’re having to send them back again. I wish we’d chosen a different brand.

Hancock and Moore likely doesn't make the mechanism in the recliner. All that stuff is purchased from the furniture companies from Leggett & Platt.
