Here are some photos of rooms with that coastal vibe you mentioned you like. To translate this in your room, would you consider:

- adding slipcovers to your couch and chair?

- an upholstered blue or cream colored ottoman as a coffee table or one with lighter colored wood (painted white wood or driftwood or reclaimed wood)?

- painting current TV console to white or changing it to one with a lighter wood tone?

- perhaps lighter colored paint for walls

- adding in a few throw pillows with coastal-type patterns and colors like blue & white (ticking) stripes

Anyway, just a few ideas. So far, I think you've got some great elements that can be incorporated in a coastal space, like your accent chair and rug. Great room....looking forward to seeing the transformation! :-)

The sofas are hand-me-downs and have electric recliners on both ends. They sit pretty straight up so are only comfortable when reclined. Can I still get slip covers that allow them to recline?

Also, with reclining sections, not sure slipcovers would work so well. Maybe others can help advise you on that. Would you be open to getting new upholstery pieces altogether?

Please do not pay that much for the PB round coffee table. Look for similar ones in thrift stores. ebay, craigslist & distress it yourself. I like the style very much.

Should I put a cream colored sectional where the dark couch and chair is or get a sofa and chair/patterned chair like the layout is now?

On the TV wall, please won't you give the arrangement a bit of breathing space?

I'm so in love with your ropey chair. But yes, the sofa and reclining chair are probably the main reason the room looks dark. I would not get a sectional, but I don't like sectionals for many rooms. Your layout is good -- go shopping for a light-coloured sofa and chair. What fun. I think it would be fine if they matched because you have the other chair for variation.

Look at my pic, Dani, with the bit of wall showing between the TV screen and the various pictures. Look at yours, where they are squashed together, no space between them. That's what I mean. :-) So move the top line maybe four inches higher, and the ones on each side maybe three/four inches further from the screen. It's a great layout, it just needs adjustment.

Yes. Get a cream/white/ivory sofa. Your rug, window treatments, chair are all perfect though :-)

What did you want photoshopped? Rina is right on re: your TV gallery. It needs to space out and I would square up too :-)

See that's why I love photoshop! looks so good. Sofas are an easy decision now :)

Some unsolicited advice: pull the rug closer to the FP with short end of rug parallel to FP. Center couch on long side of rug with chairs angled at each end. This arrangement will bring seating group closer to the TV so you won't need those ottomans and you avoid the "furniture pushed against the walls" look that you really don 't need to do in this spacious space. (Sorry, I couldn't help myself :)). It's a beautiful room!

Well that was a workout...I moved everything around but either the back of the couch didn't look nice, there was a big space in the chair area, or everything was off centered. Here's the pics but I ended up putting everything back and just switching the lamps.

Love the window treatments. Are those solar shades or woven shades?

They are roller shades from budget blinds. There's a valance on top to cover the roll. You just have to be careful measuring because they are inside mount and need to be perfect. Super easy for me and the kids to raise and lower though.

I love the lighter look that lessismore posted. The new coffee table really lightens up. Do you have a Home Goods near you? I have seen some great tables in our local shop lately. Of course nothing I am looking for though.

Yes. I've only had them a couple weeks but pricing was better than other companies, a guy came out to do the measuring and had a huge book of samples, and my mother-in-law who used to sell blinds for a living approved. Also each blind has a one time free replacement warranty.

If you want a light coastal look then the elephant in the room is the dark leather furniture. No matter what you add and how much you spend, the dark leather furniture will suck out the light in the room. Start with replacing the sofa and club chairs with natural linen upholstery or slip covered furniture. Stick with large scaled pieces and the look will still be comfortable for a man. It is rarely successful to pair light painted and natural wicker furniture with heavy dark leather furniture no matter how much one might want to compromise with their mate.
