I'd go for a warm, light yellow, which would make it feel less like a kitchen cave.

Another possibility with your white counters would be light gray cabinets.

This color is very cute, but yes, you should paint in here. The cabinets look dark in the photo and you want to appeal to as many potential buyers as possible with a light/bright kitchen. Love your glaze idea - Kraftmaid has an upgrade product (espresso glaze, maybe?) that looks like what you have in mind. Be sure to go LIGHT on your color so those cabinets don't look dingy after you paint 'em - I want your hard work to pay off!
What about painting just the top cabinets? You have great counter space and so much storage!

Yes I agree with Natalie... Cream cabs a little darker than Swiss Coffee. Walls could be a little darker than cab color as there are soooo many cabs. Maybe get some paint chips to match floor and backsplash. Keep some contrast going for interest... But neutral. Spice up color (aqua, teal, citrus?) with accessories and flowers, clock, etc.

Definitely, get rid of that green and go to Home Depot ( I rarely give this kind of advise, lol ), they sell a Kitchen Refinishing Kit for like 70 dollars, it includes everything you need to paint and do a lite glaze on the cabinets, its simple and easy, just make sure, you dont get paint on the hardware and do the front and back of the doors and all the trim. They will answer any questions you may have as to the procedure and you can always practice on one door, Its water based and it includes a satin top coat to protect the finish.

Ralston - Thank you! I'm pretty handy but it IS a big kitchen. I am figuring it will take me a full week to refinish the cabinets and paint the walls. Does that sound reasonable? I'll let you know if I have any questions. Will probably be a late Jan or Feb project :)

well, most likely it will take you longer, but, I will be happy to assist you!!

I would first concentrate on the cabinets and leave the walls alone. I would also think about going to an espresso color so your cabinets contrast the countertops. A charcoal color could also be beautiful. Both of these ideas would be painted only, no glazing necessary! This too, would save you a bit of time and labor. I feel that if you go with darker cabinets, then you can eliminate the need to deal with your wall color. The darker cabinets would also contrast to you existing backsplash detail.

Chroma Natrix you are the bomb!! Thank you so much for that! That was exactly what I had in mind - now I have something to show my husband to help convince him that this is a necessary expense. You really have me pegged - when we show the house I always have flowers and usually sunflowers - funny!!

So welcome! Our work has transferred us often and I've sold three homes in the past 4 years... all within 4 days of putting them on the market-- clean, bright, uncluttered with great color in the accents did the trick. Kitchens are especially important.

I've learned a lot from buying and selling a number of homes all over the country. For example, I had a realtor tell me that she was showing a home and the potential buyer LOVED everything about it. But it had a green master bedroom. She said "I love this home, but I don't like green and can't have it in my master bedroom." She passed on the house!!! Two lessons: It gave me a whole new appreciation for how difficult it is for most people to imagine choosing and painting new colors, and also how many people don't want to have to do anything when they move in.

We obviously aren't in the majority. Yes, love those sunflowers!

Many do not have vision and lose out on some amazing properties. hewillneverforsakeyou, (love the name and hope it applies when you tell him you are painting the kitchen :>) my friend has found, in trying to sell her house, that the only color some potential buyers understand is BEIGE and more beige. How nice! First let me say that I'm a fine arts professor and former graphic designer, so the software version I use has less to do with the results than my training in drawing, painting, design and color theory and over thirty years experience in digital graphics . Home design isn't my profession.... just a creative outlet that dovetails with my painting career. Blessed with a good education :-).

I offer that background info because I wouldn't want your friend to purchase the very costly software (between $600 & $1000) thinking she could use it to get these results. Photoshop CS6 wasn't developed for home design. I just have a particular interest in home renovation, so I've taught myself to use it to "paint" interiors and exteriors in order to help me visualize and save myself from some costly mistakes.The software may cost nearly as much as it would to repaint the cabinets, and would require an education to use.

However, If your friend has a couple of options she's considering and she'll send you good photos to post with her ideas, I'd be happy to see what I can do. Other than that, there may be some less expensive programs she could experiment with and some paint companies offer online programs you can use in which you upload your photos and "doctor" them using their paint colors. Sherwin Williams had one a few years ago, and I'd imagine there are others. Best to you! How's the home prep going?

Well, you are so sweet. Thank you. I will try to get a picture or two and upload them for her and see if you can work a little magic. So very nice of you to offer. You will lover her - she has VERY fun, funky taste! An artist herself in a way. But very old school - doesn't use a computer for much. As for my project - we have someone looking at the house tomorrow so I have tabled my painting for now. ( maybe I can just pack instead of paint:)
