Will try later. my cottage has a raised kitchen, and the table sits next to a railing that overlooks the lower living area. the table is pushed against the railing most of the time, but pulled away when we have company. cant figure out how to centre it.

You have done what you can, which is to move the lighting to center over the table when it is extended. Your only alternative would be to use a ceiling fixture with adjustable spots that could be adjusted as necessary.

i dont think swagged on a hook is ugly. use/make a curtain tender (pole with hook on end) to move the light on and off the hook as necessary.

when i hear "cottage" i hear "make do in a charming fashion". hook that light.
