From a discussion about Jersey Boy from several years back:

"Red Rose is an open pollinated, stable cross of Brandywine x Rutgers, sold by Tomato Growers Supply for over a dozen years that I know of. The only reason I could see for buying Burpee's extremely expensive version of this cross would be to collect F2 seeds to spend several years selecting your own version of what you can buy now for less than half the price and a fraction of the effort."

Burpee is fairly well known among experienced growers for taking an existing variety, doing a bit of seed selection on it, and then slapping their own name on it and marketing it as something "new and improved" and available "only from them". One reason why many of us will not deal with them for seeds.

So what you most likely have is Red Rose seeds and it has the disease resistance of good old Rutgers, nothing more, nothing less.

Summer Girl is nothing more than selected seeds from later maturing Early Girls and will have the same characteristic of the standard Early Girl which one can buy for half the price.

It's cool, last year I got a very late start and forced to buy earlry girl plants (the only thing left) at a hardware store in the middle of may due to a bad germination I had and wasted all my seeds.

I figured I would be better off at least with something I was familiar with (early girl) and the family liked. Then saw Jersey boy, I bought it because I always wanted to grow Brandywine but not that much of an expert and had BER with heirlooms in the past and other stuff. So I just got them plus, the name is fun to say around my area when I give them to friends and such since I am right across the river from New Jersey. In the past we used to buy Rutgers and Bradywine at the local farms here and my family loved them. So could be interesting. But I wish I knew now about how I could of got them cheaper.

thebutcher - We will both have an opinion on Jersey Boy - by the end of the season - I spent the big bucks at Burpee necessary to try this new variety. I can't tell you a thing about it except for what I have read at this point. My starts of Jersey Boy are already up and I hope it will be a great one!
