Can you mount the tv over the fireplace?

Dilemma for me is to make the flow of where the couch is and the fireplace is a one giant living area or beak up in two? Breaking up in two may be making the space too small and crowded but then again the current owners have large couches there so it may actually yield more space after that's removed....

Sectionals and pool tables take up a large footprint. What kind of furniture will you move into the space?

I agree with decoenthusiate. IMO the way the current owners have set up this space feels too crowded. Plus it's hard to tell what the true focal point is in the room (focal point seems to be the pool table?). I think first considering how you will use the space will help better determine a layout that will work for you.

Yes. Definitely hard to focus which these large object in the way. Maybe that's why I'm having trouble coming up with the arrangement

I might place a sectional near the fireplace, facing the window. It will balance the fireplace by the l-part coming more into the room and also making the fireplace a focal point. Across add two single chairs with a console table under the window. On wall next to fireplace, you could add a bookcase and place tv there (with art over fireplace) or place tv above fireplace.

Hi, I like Maureen's layout ideas especially with the suggestions of having the TV on the wall to the right of the fireplace (like current owners have now) and the 2 chairs with console table in the area by the windows.

Another thought would be to create a small game table with 2 chairs vignette (for cards, chess, checkers) by the window. Photo examples of what I'm thinking are posted below.

Then you can still place a sectional by the fireplace area/facing the windows (as Maureen suggested above). Or, have a sofa facing the fireplace/TV and (if there's still enough space) place another lounge chair to the left corner of the fireplace (angled into the seating group). Hope this description makes sense.

Once you paint that dark green wall a lighter brighter color and bring in your furniture, it will be easier to figure things out. I'd opt for one large room, but don't place your furniture against the walls. Float your couches. You'll have lots of fun with this beautiful home! Congratulations!

Is this pic of the current owners? If this is not your furnishings, I think just playing with what you have until you like the layout. If these are your furnishings, move the pool table out of this space completely.

Another good idea I forgot to mention is to go on line for a 3-d room planner...it will really help. Nothing like the real thing, but it may give you a sense of couches vs a sectional, rectangle vs square coffee table, and most likely with placement. Good luck.

I'm not sure I'd use a sectional in this room. It fills the space too much, and the one there now is most definitely in the wrong place flow wise. Totally agree with the idea of chairs and a table where the sectional is now. Are you going to use furniture you already have, or purchase all or mostly new?

I agree with JAH custom design. I feel that the sectional will fill the room too much no matter the size as seen in the current owners pic. I think perhaps a nice cream couch by the window with a table to make it a place to hang out and put two navy blue/or blueish color chairs by the fire place? It will break up the space but may flow better. Color the walls very light minty blue/green(ever so slight)?

I think it is an easy problem to solve, provided you are willing to let go what is in that space now (or in the pic) 1) you've got to get rid off the pool table. no matter what you do, there is not going to be any "open" feel with a pool table in the middle of a living room. it simply doesn't belong there 2) you cannot have a puffy sectional from the 80' (or 90'??) in there. if you must have a sectional, pick something that has modern and simple line (check out boconcept, and for less pricey options, CB or CB2, or IKEA even west elm but I personally don't like west elm furniture due to its thick profile and too much of earthy tone) if you are not obsessed with sectional, just get a wide sofa with lower back profile. then put two wingback chairs (not the grandpa type but in modern shape) next to the fire place. 3) be mindful of the color. I have never had any sofa or chairs in dark color (leather or upholstered) it automatically introduces stuffiness (unless the shape is super clean) attached pic shows my big (most likely too big for your space but it has simple lines and low back profile) custom made sofa with snow white top grain leather with a wingback chair upholstered in simple fabric.

one more thing now I saw the other side - move the TV to the wall above the fife place. you can put two wingback chairs next to the window with a nice smallish round table in between, then put the sofa facing the fire place or facing the window. if you are like me who always lies down watching TV, seating perpendicular to the TV actually works; if you often have guests, you probably need to sofa to face the fireplace.

The problem isn't that the fireplace is in the middle of the room (that would be ideal) but that the living room stops abruptly on the left side of the fireplace. There's no room to treat the fireplace as the center. It might as well be in the corner.

Please don't mount the TV over the fireplace. It will be way too high, plus leave you with a huge empty space to the right. Mount it on an articulating arm, and then you can put your furniture anywhere you want.

First you'll need to define your space with an area rug. Think of the wall with the fireplace and TV (I'm assuming you'll be putting the TV on the same wall) as your focal point. Put a 3 seat couch facing that wall, and 2 comfy chairs to the right (by the windows, but not all the way back against them. Then you can decide on tables. Always build with the biggest pieces first. It won't be as perplexing once you have your own things in the space.

is this the main living room, or is there another family room? i have issue with the couch facing the fire place, b/c of the half wall by the entrance. it limits couch placement, and walking area to get to it! if its too closed off on the right people will have to walk all the way around to get to the sofa. so are you planning to put the sofa facing the windows, and then group two chairs to face the fireplace wall?

Flair Lighting: no there is another family room. This room I thought of using as more of guest and in general.. I will not put anything facing the fireplace as it will back the open feeing. I may leave it open and put couches and perhaps chairs by the window/ wall. I will not up TV up the fire place. Too high and I hate that. Why would you watch your TV that way? I'll figure that out I guess. The decor will be completely different and brighter.

If another family room, get rid of the TV in this room. Add a book shelf, maybe built-in, and as others have suggested put a couple of chairs and maybe a small side table between the chairs to make the area to the back of the photo a small reading /library area. Then the remainder of the area is smallish, and so go with a love seat instead of a full sofa. Maybe one upholstered side chair with a contrasting fabric. Love seat could face the fireplace (my choice), or go with back to the reading area, and side chair takes the other position. Then a couple of additional side chairs could flank the other side of the fireplace. For these two side chairs, get something that is not too big and has open legs--also good if the loveseat has open legs rather than upholstered to the floor. The open legs will preserve more of a sense of space. A smaller size coffee table, maybe steel/iron open frame with a rustic wood or glass top in front of the love seat. Comfortable seating for 5 with a focus on the fireplace, and a an intimate reading area for two, with view out the window in the back.

We had a similar problem when we bought our new house only the fireplace was stuck in the corner at the end of a long wall with a big hole in the middle for entertainment Center which we could never find one to fit

So we ended up pulling fireplace out of the wall and boarded that up as a wall
Then moved it to Center , before the whole room was off balance
Then we added a tiled hearth and nice mantle.
We then put our TV on the wall above and pretty much made that wall the focal point
We also added shelves beside the fireplace .

Know you said you didn't want it in the Center but that gives you two options to make it your focal point and arrange around it or pull it out and move it

For us getting it out of that stupid corner idea worked
