I keep my reusable shopping bags in the trunk of my car for big shopping and in my hall closet for walking trips to the stores. I have all kinds and usually carry a small one with me even when I'm not planning on shopping just in case. I also have one on my bicycle handlebars.
I keep my reusable Tupperware containers (for lunches) in my main kitchen drawer. They are the most used item in my kitchen, so I'm not afraid to relegate the most prominent storage drawer to them. I keep reusable kleen kanteen water bottles in the drawer directly beneath the Tupperware.
It took me a long time to move those items out from a dark dingy corner, but once I did, what a difference in cutting down on waste! My kitchen is not organized the way my mother's was, but I don't have the same lifestyle she had either.

Our tote bags are in a cubby in our front hall closet, so easy to access on our way out. Have some in the car and one in my purse (use at the pharmacy, library - always handy). We have shelving in our laundy room for reusable stuff that is not needed every day, as we don't want to clutter up the kitchen cupboards. For tupperware, I have used a prime pull out drawer that is handy on a daily basis.

We have a bench in our front entry with cubbies where we keep the tote bags. We just fold them up. It's the red bin in the picture.

my grocery shopping backs are all folded into a Trader Joe's bag (the largest) and they live in my car. i cant believe they are now over 7 years old (i know because of when i moved away from the store they are from) and only one has died. I have one whole foods bag on a hook that i use to walk to..whole foods. my daughter gave me a handsome bag that i use for library books. lunch leftover sized containers are in one drawer, bigger containers in another place, stacked with the lids on, much easier when you dont have to match things up in a hurry.

the bane of my existence is that gladware continues to change dimensions so that what looks to be the same sized carton isnt and lids arent interchangeable. i've taken to writing on them with sharpie so that A containers match A lids, Bs with Bs, etc. Pffft. we used to reuse restaurant take out containers but they've all gone to flimsy choices which cannot be reused. that doesnt work so good for me!

So, a common idea among the people here is that you give your totes, your tupperware, your water bottles, a high priority spot in the home. That's certainly not tradition! but we don't live in our great-grandparents' homes anymore do we? So, it makes sense to move what we want to use to high traffic areas of our homes/vehicles.

No front entry or hall closet, so cloth tote bags fight with bags of rinsed plastic recyclables on a hook in a kitchen alcove. I need to buy a large trash can to store those outdoors behind the car until I can drop them off. Plastic bags are stuffed into a large one and used for yard trash and pet cleanup. Egg cartons go back to the egg folks at the farmer's market. Small fridge containers are in an upper cabinet next to the fridge. Large ones in a lower cabinet because they're seldom used. Drinking water in reused plastic water bottles in the fridge. Most snacks are in there, too, healthy or unhealthy. My problem is glass trash (jars, wine bottles, etc.) because no one in my town accepts glass for recycling.

Maureen & knicetime, we have the same set ups...many different types of totes in car trunk in collapsible nylon box & a few in our entry hall closet...the better looking ones for walking trips uptown & library. I keep a small nylon purse tote in my purse too. Have been changing plastic food storage/freezer containers to glass over the past year and they are stored in a kitchen drawer next to the sink & fridge. These arrangements make it easy to use the items as intended when we shop or cook...it becomes automatic...a habit.

When we lived in a Philly apartment (no car & walked everywhere), we kept our tote bags on hooks above the entry hall bench...and I still made room in our tiny kitchen's drawers for then plastic food containers.

I've stopped using plastic food containers and invested in glass ones. Totes are folded and all stored into one large tote, hang on a hook in the garage.

If I do wind up with store bags, I save them for my daughter who brings them to her condo mail room and people can used them for a mutt mitt.

I also use a hall closet for totes. I'm lucky to have a house with loads of storage space. I also carry a few in the trunk along with a freezer bag.

I'm getting ready to do the same JudyG. I don't like drinking or eating out of plastic.

They are in the trunk of the car for shopping, in my office for projects and hanging in the mud room to grab when you're walking out the door. They are terrific!

We have a basked drawer where all the totes are going. It took some time to get into the habit of getting the bags before we go shopping, but we managed to get there. I haven't used plastic bags in a long time. I did have quite a few paper bags from Trader Joe or Whole Foods, but those got used for storing recycle.
I don't use plastic containers. Glass, stainless or ceramic works great.
