It's a fine amount of pruning :-)

The only concern that I have is the potting mix, which looks to be composed of peat or coir. In such a mix, you'll have to be careful not to overwater.

Also, I assume that's a #1 nursery container, which is fairly large for the plant. That said, in a well-draining mix, a container that size will grow a large plant very quickly.

No sand. Gravel, perlite, turface, DE, pumice, red lava rock, granite, quartize, all in the size range of 1/16 - 1/4 inch works very well.

marguerite - NAPA oil absorb, part # 8822, is diatomaceous earth. Big bag for 7-8 bucks. I sift for gritty mix and use the fines for actually absorbing oil.

No, I am absorbing oil that gets spilled in my garage or drips on my driveway from someone's leaky car or truck. So far, I don't have any oily plants. (wink)

The DE or Diatomaceous Earth used as a grow medium is CALCINED Diatomaceous Earth. The distinction is important to point out, to anyone new to the product.

The stuff made to absorb oil can work just fine, but some have had issues with it getting soft and deteriorating rapidly, or just starting off too mushy. It's probably a good idea to test your particular purchase/lot by soaking it in water awhile, before using it in a batch of growing medium. The heart of the matter is the actual purpose of the product, and the quality controls that flow from that.

Calcined DE that is manufactured for landscaping/soil amendment is just simply made to better standards, for our purposes. It's made to be hard and stable for many years.
