how about putting an appliance ‘garage’ with either a rolltop door or pocket door? Here are some photos corner opening rolltop closed, 2nd is counter facing pocket doors open, 3rd is a ?? door. lol usually used to hide daily items like coffeemaker, toaster, blender, etc… so you don’t have to put them away and pull out every day, just slide them in and hide them on the counter.

What a great idea having "appliance garages". This is a big issue for me as I have three kids and gluten free kitchen. I have to make everything from scratch!

If I'm reading the drawings correctly, the doorway opposite the sink is/has been widened. The following might seem blasphemous, but here goes:

Move the range, fridge and cabinet between forward to align their backs with the second step of the bulkhead. That will make the whole thing less obtrusive, and won't change storage. Depending on depth of that step, you could have the entire wall built out to that point, or you could have the cabinets made deeper (although deeper wall cabinets can sometimes be awkward to use and not always worth the extra cost). Or bring the upper cabinets forward and do appliance garages on both sides? Then bring that side of the doorway forward to hide the side of the fridge.

If you do this, the entire block will look smaller, and more like a cabinet. It will ease the transition from sink to range, and probably reduce the bashed hip factor! You might also want to consider putting false doors on the "big box" so it looks like cabinetry.

Granted, this would probably require the island to either slide down or be shrunk, but I think the space working better might more than compensate for that.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! An appliance garage was my idea but Ikea's new Sektion kitchen doesn't have it as an option. I might design a custom one and use a matching ikea door. I'll be sure to post what we do! Thanks again!

Hi melaniesea! We ended up making a hybrid cabinet/appliance garage that sat on top of the box but below the upper corner cabinet. Essentially, it's a horizontal cabinet and the door swings up and open, and here is where my in-laws tuck their electric kettle (my FIL installed a receptacle inside the cabinet), and some other counter staples (butter dish, etc.). The box remains but it's less obtrusive, and we bumped everything forward a few inches to make the corner less severe.
