What size are the windows? If shorter, you could consider a cleaner cornice board look, instead of the usual ruffled valance.

The windows are about 48" tall. I thought about the valances just to soften the look since the room will also need to double for an office. The shades stay up most of the time. I bought - but haven't put up - a simple, non-ruffled valance and was just wondering if that's the way to go. With all the bookcases in there, it seemed that curtains would add to the cluttered look and I was trying to keep it simpler and softer. I appreciate the input. Still too many boxes to unpack so a photo wouldn't be so helpful!

Once you get all of the boxes unpacked the answer will come to you. With lots of bookcases my thoughts goes to drapes on either side, if the windows are all cost together. Treat them as one use one pair of drapes on each end. The drapes will extend the room and keep that vertical line that the book cases give. However, if it does feel too cluttered, stay with the shades and see if you can add a decorative band of trim across the bottom of the shade for a little decoration. Do the windows have casing around them? And are the Shades inside mounted? Photo would be helpful even with boxes, it will answer some questions.
