Love having a TV in the kitchen, helps me pass the time when I'm there alone cooking or cleaning. I get that it's not for everyone, but I don't get why so many people are bothered by others having one. To each his (her) own. My go-to channels are HGTV, Food TV, and the news. Like others have mentioned, it's not for when I'm watching a show that needs a lot of attention - or close viewing for that matter as it's a pretty small TV - but just for a way to pass the time.

I have one in my kitchen, because my kitchen is in the back of the house. I watch news and House Hunters or Property Brothers.

I despise washing dishes! So, I'll pop in a movie and listen to it while I'm doing house chores. If I had a small shelf in the laundry room I would probably put one in there too. However, the only room I will not have a tv in is the bedroom. (Electric&radio waves) But I can watch it through the doorway to the livingroom.

@Bruce Crawford....I take it that you and the wife are "empty nesters" So..I guess rather than looking at your wife to make conversation...y'all would rather watch "Property Brothers" or some other compelling TV show...And "loathe" is a curious word to you...but it's a fact for me.
What I meant..if you're a family (with children) the kitchen, where you prepare food...should be for THAT and conversation....watching a TV while preparing food and eating with your tribe...is curious to me...

@daxwax, we are empty nesters, but she just retired and I'm still working (for as long as I can). I put the TV in the kitchen for when she's "home alone". As I mentioned above, it's not visible from the dining room. The phone & cable lines just got connected, and we're still waiting on the lattice that goes in the upper cab in the foreground, and the installer needs to return to install it, drill the hole for the wires in the back of the desk & install the hardware. I've attached a pic I took after the phone & cable were connected. I still have to mount the TV on an articulating arm & it'll be higher, just underneath the valance. This pic was taken standing in front of the rangetop on the island.

terryrose4440 I thought I was the only one who had given up television. I still have the 'machine' - I use it for DVDs and VHS viewings but it's not hooked up for air reception. Interestingly, I haven't missed it one, single day. (my tv owning friends, however, get a laugh at how, when I visit them, I'll sit gazing-transfixed at commercials on tv. hahaha-hey it's all new to me!)

Regular Clouds, know what you mean. I haven't watched for 30 years and everything moves twice as fast as it used to. It's weird. Plus the men and women "newscasters" or whatever they're called now have an odd, flawless plastic look. They look robotic... I can't help but stare.

Our family room that is open to the kitchen has a TV so my answer is yes & no.

I couldn't focus on what the actor was saying, all I could do was note the stitching on the oxford shirt and oh my goodness....that makeup! And you are right, the newscasters, especially the local ones: there is something completely unnatural about the whole scenario.

Sort of. Open plan, so you can see the flat-screen almost everywhere. I'd love to cover the tv up though. Put some sort of remote cover on it. It's black and ugly and I all but despise the crap tv shows. I tolerate it for my husband's sake (darn football), but I could easily live without a tv. (And have). We have 3 too many. They are okay for movies once in awhile, but even those have a lot of issues these days.

I refuse to ever have a tv in the bedroom! If anyone tries to put one there I will take it and drop it off the roof, seriously.

luvourhome we gave up television a few years ago and miss it not! We do own a set, but it's not connected to 'reception' - it's used for DVDs, netflix, etc. It doesn't take long to forget you ever had one. (however, when I'm visiting friends, they laugh at how I can sit transfixed at commercials, heh.)

@RegularClouds--the house had 2 new fixed flat-screens when we bought it. We had our tv, and that's how we got to 3, sigh. I challenged the hubster recently to see if he could make it 1 year without cable. I told him all the money he'd save, he, he. Well, trying to stream live sports here in BC or get hockey just wasn't working for him on the pc. So he lasted almost 4 months and the tv guy was here last week. SIGH. I kept hoping the guy would cut the wrong cord or something to derail the wiring. No such luck...

I almost got him willing to try a shoe-box antenna (yes, you read correctly), but he said we were too far away from the transmitters on the mountain and not in direct sight. (I figured the little project would buy me another few months, lol). So I'll keep scheming to get rid of the darn cable ;-)

I had a TV in my kitchen a few year back. A 14" '90's boxy one. Then when my wireless transmitters (only cable is in the living room & I had to invest in transmitters to get TV in other parts of the house) broke down, I lost the kitchen TV & I really miss it! Since then, I've resorted to cranking the living room TV to hear the news as I was cooking dinner. Deafening my family. Lol!

My kitchen is currently undergoing a reno as I type this. I have made plans to put a flatscreen TV above my fridge. I will have to find a new set of those little transmitters so I can have reception in my kitchen once again.

If anybody has figured out a good way to cover up a TV when not in use, please share. I have them because of my husband, but I'm not a fan and wd rather not have to see the ugly things!

When we bought our house, it had a TV in the kitchen. I took it out.

Mary Dillon I'm not sure if you're serious or not but I remember a friend of mine, years ago she solved this problem. She and her husband often cooked together and he was a tv nut. She, like so many of us, could do without. She had a built in cubbyhole, much like the open shelving of today, put the tv in the cubby and got a small tension rod, a valance-actually matched her kitchen window valance- and voila! - When tv not in use, it was behind the curtain. (this was in the days of tube tvs - would it be even easier to maneuver this feat today?) An added bonus of this idea that she also discovered is that the television gathered no greasy "kitchen dust" when behind the curtain!

Yes, Cooking shows, HGTV, news and dog/cat shows. Keeps my company as I am alone a lot. I also switch over to Sirius sometimes.

I'm not sure there's anyone on Earth qualified to determine where TV's belong. A lot of people have them in their bedrooms. We never have. It's our personal choice, not the result of some higher authority determining TV's don't belong there. Since our K reno, we've have one in our kitchen as my now-retired wife spends a lot more time there. It can be seen from the K, but not the DR. Here's our K TV, viewed from the rangetop on the island.

While the only place I have my tv is in the living room today, and don't think I'd want one anywhere else, I can't imagine saying that's where they "belong" - they "belong" where the owner and residents like them!

I might add, we don't have TV in LR, only in FamRm & K. When we're in LR, it's b/c we're entertaining & chatting up a storm, which would drive anyone attempting to watch TV there completely rammy.

No, we don't have a tv in our kitchen. Until I read this poll it never even occurred to me that anyone would have a tv in their kitchen. I don't think that I know anybody that does. I enjoy listening to the radio/news or music while I am in the kitchen.

angelavalentine My mother had a large kitchen and a small living room. She even had two easy chairs in her kitchen. Once she retired, she moved the tv to her kitchen where she spent most of her time, cooking, baking, socializing, etc. Truly an example of friends/neighbors perching in the kitchen.

I was always told by my parents that the dinner table was somewhere to talk about your life, discuss your day, the problems you were facing. A television takes all of that away, like a putting a phone in your hands instead of a book. Detaches people from social interaction.

I do not have a TV in the kitchen, but I have one in the Den that can be seen.

We have a small wall mounted TV in the kitchen, and that is the only place we watch TV, usually while cooking. I watch movies on my computer and my spouse does not watch movies.

In my kitchen? I don't have one in my house. I have a monitor on my computer and if I want to watch something like a news clip or short video, I'll sit there and watch it. That would be all I'd use a TV for.

Well, it's not actually hooked up to watch TV, but I do watch streaming services there, and it's hugely important......I wouldn't want to be without one. I use it all the time while cooking or cleaning up.

Toronto Veterinarian Hello to you! I think this question is posed based on furniture (objects) location and placement concepts more than the actual purpose of what it will be used for. AT least this is how I'm viewing this thread. Visual aesthetics and space and placement. (BTW, I just moved and I have a much disliked open concept for the time so my tv is placed in the living room where I can see it from the kitchen. Cannot WAIT to get back to a house with "rooms" though! :-{ )

Sorry, Regular Clouds, but not my understanding - i thought the question meant did we watch tv in our kitchens when we could be socializing or cooking. . . Since i live alone, i enjoy catching up on tv shows or the news while preparing a meal; although occasionally i get distracted and things overcook. And, like you, i much prefer rooms to an open concept. Although, i do like the ability to watch my LR TV from the kitchen. In the past, i've had TV's in my kitchen for years; sometimes only an iPad, but still . . .

That's not my interpretation, nor how the question is phrased. So, I guess we're each supposed to interpret the question and answer it based on our own understanding.

However, there's nothing about my answer that wouldn't apply to the question of objects (furniture). There's a TV there. The fact that it's hooked up to a Chromecast instead of cable shouldn't matter.

Yes…. My wife said we didn’t need a 32” tv in our kitchen. I said I agree with her because we need a 50”!!
So I removed a couple cabinets Ann built a cabinet to accommodate the 50”!
Best thing we every did…our family uses the peninsula all the time. We seem to gather around and watch football and baseball games.. also, the news and HGTV..

I don’t have a TV in my kitchen. My living room (through a large entryway) is next to my kitchen. The TV is in our living room, and you can easily hear the TV in the kitchen. My husband is a news addict, and we listen to OAN news every morning. I wish more people were aware of what is going on in our country and in our world. Growing up, my Dad had us pick an article from the NY Times every morning (I am a baby boomer, that was the newspaper of choice) and we would discuss it. I learned from an early age that news is important. But, I have gotten off track. I think it is a personal choice where you chose to place a TV.

No, and I don't think I want one. I cook and bake in my kitchen, no time for T.V. And when a meal is served, I like to sit with family or friends and just chat and enjoy the small talk. When my children were young and my husband worked different shifts, mealtimes were the only time we had to talk about our day. It was a way for all of us to relax, share ideas and opinions. No, I do not want a TV in my kitchen, lol.

kculbers I believe that people knew what was going on in the world a great deal more before there were multiple TV sets in homes. Back in the day when radios were in most homes and a few -heading toward most - had one tv set. . . that the population likely knew more about what was going on around them than they do now, with 8 sets in each home. Just saying.

Those are the few times I actually watch TV: Chopping, mixing, blending, pouring, par-boiling, deglazing, emptying or filling the dishwasher, etc are all perfect times for TV, in my opinion.

I have a tv at my kitchen desk that doubles as a computer screen connected to an apple Mac mini computer under the desk in a cupboard. Printer is in laundry room. Nice and neat. Now I do a lot on my iPad, including tv, but like to use it for more complicated projects.
