could I just cover rigid plastic with hypertufa?

I've never worked with tufa before although I've read about it and admired a lot of creations. I want to put together a small fountain for my porch using a solar-powered pump; I'm thinking of a simple bowl-like basin with the water bubbling over a few rocks. If I found a great big, cheap plastic salad bowl, or a small concrete mixing tub, could I simply use the hypertufa to cover it on all sides (making, e.g., a hole toward the rim for the pump's power lead) and then use as-is?

Thanks!
