I've never used any particular needle size for batiks but always a sharp point and not had a problem. Some batiks have a Slightly sharper print or brighter color on the front than the back, but I haven't overly fussed about it, and unless you are seeing both sides of an individual piece I don't think it would matter. I agree. Whatever you use for machine piecing on other fabric should work fine on batiks. A good sharp needle is always a good idea.

I really like Schmetz Microtex needles. They are made especially for sewing batiks, silks, etc. Also, if you are having a problem with your machine "eating" your fabric with your first few stitches, you might try using a starter piece of fabric. You start sewing on a small piece of scrap fabric (not worrying if it gets eaten) and keep sewing right off the edge of that piece and onto your block without cutting the thread. My old machine was always "hungry" and that technique really helped.

I agree with Lois. I use Schmetz Microtex needles for most all my piecing and applique. For Batiks, I use a size 80. I do not use a leader or ender ( scrap starter piece), but I do use a single needle hole plate on my machines to avoid the fabric getting pulled down into the hole.
Changing your needle often, after 8 hours of sewing, or sooner if you hear that plunking sound, is recommended. Considering how much money and time we invest in our projects, replacing the needle often is the least expensive part of it.

You didn't ask, but using a good thread is also important. I love Batiks!

Thank you very much, I had a feeling this would be the place to come for great advice! Microtex needles it is! Yes, I always use good thread, and I like the idea of changing my needle plate, I have to see if my machine even has one!
