I had one for two years in my old place, because it's what I installed to put the house on the market and I didn't want to put cast iron in for a sale. (Plus we had trouble finding one quite as narrow as the one we took out.

It looked brand new after two years, but we are pretty careful. On the other hand I used an enameled steel tub in the basement here and it's only a little over a year old and it has a small rust spot where it got scratched during construction. (I needed a 4' tub in the basement and there are virtually no options left. AS dropped their 4' tub right as I was ready to order.

So my experience with Americast was ok although for 2 years only, not ten or anything.

Thank you palimpsest. This will be my husband's tub. I don't guess he's "hard" on a tub, he just gets a LOT dirtier and grittier than I do :) I just have no faith in AS products from what I've read over the last 13 years of being on GW AND the problems I've seen in the last two houses my parents have built. They keep using AS and keep having problems with the finish, but, I don't know if it's the Americast (and neither do they). Does your AS tub have an Americast label on it?

We've had the total opposite experience with our Kohler porcelain steel tubs. They're almost 34 years old and mine looked great when we replaced it in 07. My husband's has a very small chip in the bottom from something he dropped in it but it's never rusted. It's just black and has never gotten bigger. The only thing I can surmise from all the hatred of steel tubs is that they don't make them like they used to. I feel like I said a dirty word when I mention steel tubs! LOL My husband suggested we just have his refinished but I think that comes with a whole other set of problems.

I love cast iron tubs. I am putting one in this house, upstairs. It weighs 375 lbs.

The basement tub is steel and weights 60 lbs. There is a huge difference.

In my old house I tried refinishing the existing cast iron tub and it was a failure.

Glad you brought that up. Americast is supposed to be AS' light weight answer to cast iron. Did it retain heat like a cast iron tub? Did it "feel" cast iron-like"? I'd love to get cast iron but at $1000 (Kohler Mendota), it's 2x the cost of the Americast and frankly just not in the (bathtub) budget.

I just came across this thread and since it is from 2015 -not sure if I will get any responses. but here goes...I just noticed problems with the finish of my Americast tub. It appears that the finish is wearing off in the inside curved side area on one side of the tub. The tub has a bone finish and I can see areas of white appearing. Also it feels a little rough. Upon carefully examing the area I also noticed two small areas that appear chipped around the top part of the drain assembly unit cover (located on side of tub under faucet). The two areas are white. As I said the tub has a bone finish. I am not sure when this first appeared. I just notice it today when I touched it while cleaning. The tub is carefully cared for and kept clean, no scratches or dents . Always cleaned with non abrasive cleaners . Any one have comments or experiences with this.

My new Americast tub has a hump in the bottom. I have never felt this on tubs when cleaning them. Any ideas.?

I believe I know exactly what it is. By chance, did you purchase anywhere around October 2019 ? Is it a Princeton ?

Our Americast tub has the same problem with the finish in the same area, the inside curved area. I have just now started looking into what to do about it. Did you ever solve this problem? Thanks

The finish on the inside of tub is completely worn and looks dirty ! I have never used anything abrasive nor a magic eraser. Just looks awful Anyone else have this issue. .

My tub is just over 2 years old. I'm very disappointed with the finish never used abrasive materials. The tub looks dirt and worn. I'm hoping I can get it refinished. Bathroom renovation looks great however the bathtub is an eyesore.

1. this past January-March I gutted and rebuilt our upstairs bath. The usual: new walls, floors, vanity and top, tub and surround, toilet and all the new extra parts. the tub is a 60" AS Americast with Swanstone panel surround (very expensive). Since it is upstairs, it does not get used much at all. The tub is installed per instructions, leveled and no creeks. We do not use abrasive cleaners; only those acceptable in the list given by the manufacturer. My wife and I estimate the tub has been used (for showers only) approximately 20 times. That's it. The tub does not clean up. It has a dirty appearance AND we noticed that it has pock marks now where the finish appears to be coming off. NO cracks. NO creaking. By this, I mean the tub does not move when someone is using it. This tub is junk. Do not use these products by American Standard. Even if they gave me a free tub, I cant replace it due to the Swanstone wall panels which are very expensive and high quality and cost significantly more than the tub! The installation for these panels is such that we would destroy them attempting to remove to replace the tub. Is anyone aware of any lawsuits against American Standard for this horrible product? The only answer I have found so far is a repair kit offered by AS for their wonderful product. Imagine that.

I thought it was just me. I had my Americast tub installed in June. In two weeks it looked likeI had a dirt party in it. The grime soaks into the material on the tub. Whatever you clean it with (Dawn, Tide, etc.) it also absorbs into the tub and the streaks are terrible and seems to be permanent. I am ashamed to have overnight company because the tub looks so bad. I don't know what to do.

Don’t be ashamed! Bummed, sure.
I have the same tub and same problem. Same spot is worn on the inside curve.
Got an AS refund on the tub, but the cost to remove and replace is expensive.
I did use baking soda and vinegar this week to clean soap scum and that worked well on the rest of the tub.
Maybe you could get a slip mat or bath pillow to cover the area. I might look into that, too.

I purchased this horrible AMERICAST KITCHEN sink and after a few years it started to show its dedect.….many years later I,m stuck with a very expensive repair due to sink shape cut for granite….my entire granite needs to be replaced and American Standard should be held accountable…..is there a class action lawsuit or can we start one? don’t

buy tneir product.

I am having an AS enamel tub installed through Lowes. The first one was chipped in an exposed surface when we received and we had to return it. After 2 weeks they found a new one (they said they weren't making them and had to search retailers), which I just received. On unboxing it, we found another chip in an exposed surface. We have contacted the regional manager and Lowes but have not had any response yet. This bath install was a very expensive project and not worth half of what I paid. Avoid this company if you want to keep your sanity and your money.
