You are much more likely to find 'Compactum', based on local wholesale listings. Have you tried phoning garden centers in your area? I would ask for dwarf forms instead of particular ones in case they have another you haven't heard or thought of - I think outlets up here have had a less usual dwarf one recently (perhaps 'Apollo', but I don't remember). In the past another one that was seen was called 'Mayhan'.

In most cases a smaller growing Mahonia is preferred. The species, left unpruned, can get very tall. That's why you seldom see it untouched. I think grown in the open with plenty of room it might be a nice looking plant. This one is just over the bluff in partial shade next to a Doug Fir tree and has never been pruned. I just wanted to see what it would look like left alone. I could have picked a better spot.

Two years ago I bought a few low growing mahonias in Home Depot for about $7 each. They are still very compact, maybe 18 inches high. I also have some unpruned regular mahonias and these indeed are monstrous, about 9 feet tall and still growing.

I picked one up at the fall Audubon plant sale - they have more variety in the fall than in the spring. I think they had three at the time, compact, tall and average.

I don't know where you are located or exactly what variety these are (they say small) but someone is giving them away on CL in Shelton
