Good Shade Trees for small Side Yard?

I have a small patch of ground (currently gravel on top of mostly clay) on the western side of my house that gets very warm (and heats up the house in summer).

I would like to put some narrow (spread no more than 8 feet) deciduous trees that get to 10-15' tall in there for summer sun protection.

Can anyone make any suggestions?

All I can think of is hawthorn, which does not provide a lot of shade.
