Had an oops, need advice

Today, while pulling a 4/0 wire through a 90 degree conduit body, I inadvertently took a small piece of insulation off the wire. The wire will be inside schedule 40 conduit. Two questions, would it meet code to wrap it in electrical tape? If it does not meet code, how unsafe is this fix? Outside of pulling 250' of wire and putting in a new 4/0 conductor, what are my options? I guess that's three questions.... Lol thanks for the insight!

The surest option would be to have an inspector check it out. If you aren't having this inspected want it to be compliant otherwise, then you may be able to add a box and cut and resplice at the nick. This will be easier if you are in the process of unspooling the wire and it is not fastened at either end, then maybe you can use the box to replace the conduit body. I don't think it meets code to wrap it in electrical tape.

I think that you would have received more comments and some debate on this question quicker, before this site became part of houzz. God luck.

High voltage tape should be less of a fire risk than a splice.

There is no definitive answer to the use of tape in conduit in the NEC.

There is a code against splicing wires in a conduit.

NEC reference

300.13 Mechanical and Electrical Continuity — Conductors .13 Mechanical and Electrical Continuity — Conductors.

(A) General. Conductors in raceways shall be continuous between outlets, boxes, devices, and so forth. There shall be no splice or tap within a raceway unless permitted by 300.15; 368.56(A); 376.56; 378.56; 384.56; 386.56; 388.56; or 390.6.

Taping would depend on whether it is guarantted to be safe after installation. For instance, are you planning to pull the wires through another 50 feet of conduit and sweeps after you tape it, or did the wire get nicked in the last few inches of pushing the excess wire into an LB? If you can see that the tape stayed in place after installation at the LB, then it should be fine. If you have no way of knowing if the tape was pulled off in the middle of the pull, then don't do it. Imagine getting a ball of that super good rubber tape bunched up in the middle of the run preventing you from either finishing the pull or being able to pull it back out.

There just isn't enough information in the OP's statement to give an appropriate answer for the situation.
