Need design help with a new house!!!

I like gray walls (I've always had browns and tans), but how do you keep the white trim and cupboards looking clean? I'm thinking of doing gray walls, dark wood floor, white cupboards & trim and then the island in dark wood. Thoughts?

I agree your color scheme sounds very nice. I'm assuming this will be for your kitchen, since you mention cupboards. There are some paints formulated specifically for high moisture areas, like bathrooms and kitchens, that can help reduce problems caused by water. Like olldbobbi, I'm done with flat paint forever. Your paint store will have sample boards to show how "shiny" the different finishes of paint are. If I were you, I'd choose between high gloss and semi-gloss. High gloss will show imperfections more, so take that into consideration. Please post pics as you go along :)

The only way I know of to keep the white trim and cupboards looking clean is by cleaning them regularly. You can do this with a bucket of warm water and dish soap. Your color selection ideas sound like they would look great together.

High gloss paint is easily cleaned.

I wouldn't do anything less than a semi-gloss paint on the trim. In fact, I'm done with flat paint for good. Minimum would be eggshell or satin. Flat paint is just so.....flat.

I agree white does require a bit more maintenance and cleaning. White kitchen with dark island is a great idea while providing some contrast.

We just went to a builders show and there was a bathroom display with 2 tone woods (a dark like expresso color on the sides with a board on top connecting them and then the base was lighter, but still fairly dark) and I love it! I think I would be happier with something like this than white cupboards ~ I've had white cupboards and don't know if I could do it again! If I did the above I would keep the whole island the really dark stain.....still don't know what to do about all the trim in the house ~ dark stain or white??? I want fairly dark floors. Thanks for you input!!!
