What do you mean by "configuration," the means of attachment of the shelves, the materials, or what?

Please rethink this unless cleaning is your favorite pass time as you're going to have to wash everything on a monthly basis if you don't want it ruined due to the dust turning to a greasy grime. I think open shelves in kitchens and such as you're thinking about will be looked on as one of the worst design ideas of the early 21st centruy in another 25 years.

It's actually behind the kitchen and in a game room.

you can also do door-less cabinets. i have some of both (doorless cabinets and open shelves) and both work for me.

as a practicality, i wouldnt use open shelves for vast dozens of kinds of glassware that rarely are used. if you use something at least every other month it will be used and washed before its ever dusty.

Mamagut, in determining placement, take a good look at what will be stored overhead, and determine the total length of shelving you will need, and possible location zones - for instance, are hot beverages to be served from this area? Separation of cups from stemware can help determine a shelving breakdown. Are serving pieces for snacks something you want to display overhead? Are any of your pieces more vertically oriented, needing additional display space? Do you want room to expand for additional pieces later on? Those answers will clarify shelf height, length and placement.

Thank you all for the comments. I have more to consider, and will probably keep looking for either some type of design that doesn't make it feel cramped.

Give us an update when you get closer to the project. Pictures are worth a thousand words and you will get more useful info from us. I like shelves for this space if the room is small. I like the fact that you have considered this at all, many people would slap up cabinets and call it a day. Don't forget to consider thrift store finds if your home is traditional. You could even repurpose the upper part of a hutch... so many possibilities if you think out of the box. We have them for you as soon as you give a some pictures of the space!

I sure will. I know plans are hard to imagine compared to standing in the space. I wish the architect could have had more vision when he drew that space. I appreciate the help, I will post more pics as we move farther along.
