It was pricey as the painter could make it look like fracture paint.

Here's the island. The height is 36 inches and their is about five inches under the granite but not sure a stool would work and the wine cooler has handles that may obstruct those five inches. Perhaps i could put two stools there?

@saundrac9 : I asked the same question in my above comment because we are looking to have our cabinets painted as well. We have received one quote for 4k (they did my mother's kitchen and did an excellent job) and I'm expecting another company to come out this week to look at our kitchen.

Saundrac9, you do need to make sure that you hire a true professional. Not every painter is comfortable or experienced with a sprayer. Also, a high quality product makes a huge difference and will cost a bit more. If your quote seems too good to be true, it might be. A bit of advice...check references. Ask for before and after pictures of similar work or find someone on a reputable site like Angie's List. Good luck on your project!

I actually think this change was for the better. The backsplash is prettier looking now and a feature. The handles make it look homier. The kitchen is brighter. Nice job. I know sometimes, it's difficult to paint good wood. But sometimes it works too.

Hi Fortune decor, you mean the top of the granite to fit stools? Would you see the extension?

It was around 4K, which my husband thought was insane, and it may have been too high or just right but the seller's builder used him to paint the whole house and had examples of his work spray painting other kitchens with excellent results, so i used him. I will say the key for me is we had to move in a few days later. One, the spray goes everywhere, he locked down the area with plastic to keep it from going into the other rooms and used those big fans, but it was still on the window screens. So factor in asking them about their prep and clean up as much as the actual painting and if you are living there how will that work? They seem to have to use oil based in the sprayer but we used non voc non chemical AFM safe coat when we redid the master bath and i really didn't want to use non voc paint, but we had to for the paint to work. I used a strong fan to clean the air in that room that we installed in the house to run the air through a UV light. I was going to do that anyway, but it's a few days to do it and a couple of days after to get rid of the smell and particles.

Down the line, i would like to replace either the backsplash or the granite as they don't really go together, but it's much less noticeable now!

Nice paint job on the cabinets. The counter-backsplash combo is hideous. Good to hear that you'll be tackling that next.

I've changed out a tile backsplash - what a pain. I sure hope people stop tiling their backsplash soon. What is the tile needed there for? If, once every five years, you get a little spaghetti sauce on the wall, you can wipe it off the paint easier than cleaning most tile. I've been discouraged from buying houses due to the style specific tile backsplash. Let's just quit with it already.

Love the way this came out! Great Job! :) Looks very coastal, which I happen to <3. Not everyone has the time or money to replace everything. I think you can make these colors work just fine no need to change counter or back splash unless you really want too. :) Two stools in front of cabinets doors would work. maybe black legs with blue fabric top to match back splash. ;)

Love the new look. If it were me, I'd keep the backsplash and change out the granite or maybe go with concrete.

It would cost more money, but if you changed the countertop on the island you could have a bigger piece that would hang over. Because it is separtate from the other countertops, it doesn't have to be the same. You could probably find a remnant that would cost less. You could save and repurpose the old countertop for another project.

I would consider getting a whole new coordinating (chopping-block/hardwood/quartz/etc.) island top, just enough larger that it would allow for 2-3 stools.
Then, it's quite possible you could have the existing island granite top re-cut to fit over your washer-and-dryer, and really improve your laundry room while you're at it (that is, if it's not already done).

Yes, we redid the master bath so no budget at present, to get needed furniture and deal with the granite/ backsplash issue yet! :) But i wonder what the prior owners were thinking? They don't go together!

I am on the west coast so at least there is that! I fell in love with Cambria i picked for my master bath, so i may consider that down the line and not granite i have to worry about. I guess it's hard for contractors to tell folks, 'hey those don't go together and your resell value will be affected if you choose strange combos!' If they were honest, the rest of my bathrooms wouldn't be in need of redoing ten years after they chose them.

Thanks, Randi and Lynne, i hadn't thought of just swapping out that big enormous piece, and at least having that be a calmer solid color or white would be an improvement. The laundry has a smaller area that could use that there, most likely. So that's something to add to my project list. But it would need to be a big remnant, as it's a continent more than an island!

Here's my idea, the shelves underneath on one side of the island, can they be removed so you can have room to place stools there, that would be your best bet, you have enough areas for display purposes. The kitchen is beautiful.

Have you considered adding crown molding to the wall cabinets? I had crown installed in my basement kitchen and had the wood cabinets painted white.

I had a small space between the cabinets and ceiling, similar to yours.

I tried for grey on one shelf hand painted, but didn't like the color chosen and realized i 'd need a couple of weeks to pick the right grey, with that backsplash and granite. The white looks softer in person, it was very bright in that shot.

I would change the granite to accommodate stools and change the color of granite to make the island a true focal point.

Your kitchen looks beautiful with the cabinets redone! I would either buy a new top for the island or take out the shelves on each end. Either the backsplash or the countertop has to go as they just do not go together.

Thanks for the ideas, when i can spare the budget as i have other pressing projects, i can look into changing out the island granite but it may be easier to do all of it at once when i can.

Losing the shelves seems problematic as they aren't all the way across there are drawers in use on the other side of the island. So i can either use a longer lip on the replaced stone later and put stools under there or do without them, i guess. I don't think i can remove the shelf's.

Your kitchen looks wonderful! We have been struggling with the option of replacing our oak cabinets or painting since they are in excellent condition. Your results are making us consider painting. Now to search for a good painter. You said you are on the west coast. Orange County California by any chance?!?

No, sadly we are in LA so i can't send our person to you in OC or Tiburon! But the contractor above in the comments, had excellent advice to find someone who specializes in painting cabinets, which is a different animal than just a painter.

If they do cabinets and you can see their work and ask questions about their prep and clean up ( key!) then you should be okay. I keep telling myself it's an investment in our time here, and when we sell down the line plus it's cheaper than all new cabinets!

While you're living with the countertop/backsplash combo, you could greatly improve the look by choosing accessories that integrate the colors in the scheme. Consider what you place on your counters, but also consider what you are displaying through the glass doors of the upper cabinets...bring some of the countertop color up into those display cabinets and see if you can't find some items for the countertop that incorporate some of the color in the counter as well as the backsplash color....

What do you think of painting or papering the inside of the cabinets with the glass doors. I would match the backsplash if I did this. What is on the floor? I like what you have done. I see a light in the corner cabinet and under cabinet lighting as well.
