New Kitchen Layout - how to terminate a slab backsplash

We are renovating the original 1960s kitchen in our home and I've fallen in love with the idea of a Calacatta slab backsplash. However, with the new open concept style of our kitchen, there is no natural point of terminating the backsplash. Would it make sense to just end the backsplash with a decorative edge?

I've attached the proposed kitchen layout, followed by an "inspiration pic" to show the aesthetic I'm trying to achieve. All opinions welcome (including opinions on proposed layout). Thanks.

It seems you have 2 options - go to the edges of walls, or go to the edge of the counter. I personally think with a slab, you go to the edge of the counter, and with tile, to the edge of the walls.

As for a decorative edge, you said you want the aesthetic in the bottom picture. That one shows a straight edge, as opposed to a decorative edge like the photo I've attached. I personally prefer a straight edge.

I'm having a hard time find a reference picture where someone used a slab and just terminated it at the edge of a counter (rather than at a corner where it meets another wall. And the professionals (kitchen designer and countertop fabricator) think it will look bad...

So I guess I'm wondering if I should give up on my desire to use a slab as opposed to tile.

I appreciate your two cents!

the bigger difficulty is the upper cabinets line up with the lower cabinets....unfortunately, the counter extends past the lowers and you're left with a smidge...one way or the other -- my pet peeve in kitchen finishes. if you extend the splash with nothing underneath , it "floats" and looks weird. the function is to protect the wallboard in a decorative manner -- no counter...nothing to protect.

do you love the slab appearance ie, no grout and an uninterrupted pattern? this is a room you will spend a H U G E amount of time in.... go with your gut and do what you love!
