You need to be certain of three things; 1) that it will stand up to earthquake AND meets new California standards for energy efficiency, which kick in any time the envelope of the building is changed, 2) that it can be locked securely, and 3) that there is an excellent warranty and qualified installer in your area.

It all depends on the structure and how much weight is sitting above the "corner without a post". This building shows a tall, single story wall...there is nothing above the corner...which is probably why it works here. A chat with your local town hall about building ordnances would certainly help.

any prices or experience from those who have installed something like it? our is a ranch style with not much more than a roof above

If a structural engineer looks at the frame of the door and considers it structurally sound to carry the load of the house - fine. But do use a structural engineer to determine this.
