With a good backhoe and operator, probably around 40', but that would require a number of trucks to haul away the dirt. I assume you meant how deep should a pond be? And that would depend upon your zone, and what you want to put in your pond.

Given my assumption on how this pond will be used, assumed climate, assuming sun exposure, number and kinds of fish and factoring in all the details given it should be 32" deep. However, if my assumptions aren't correct then the pond should be a different depth.

I would not dig less than 3 feet at the deepest point (not knowing your pond circumference or shape) If you have herons or other predators, I would suggest that you not build-in wading areas - only steep sides. My pond - built originally in 2002 does not have a bottom drain, either. Some other builders might insist on it. Buy the best epdm liner and put old carpeting beneath it.
