Need help re-doing our bathroom

We recently purchased a small apartment for my parents and I need to redo the bathroom as it is stuck in the 1970's.

It is a quite a small bathroom measuring 2.1meters x 1.9meters

I was thinking of removing the bathtub and having a walk-in shower with a shower head and also include a bench and hand shower as my dad is elderly and would like to make it comfortable for him. However I think the window is in the way. How do I incorporate this idea?

I would also like to include some shower niches and 'floating' basins and toilet as well as use rectangular tiles to give the illusion of space (all credits to Houzz and pros advice). I would also like to do everything in neutrals like beige.

Is there anything else you could suggest in terms of space and storage as well as layout that I could consider?

Also how do I make the window more attractive? am planning on replacing the painted glass with frosted glass to let more natural light into the bathroom as well.

I am including the pictures of the bathroom as is and will definitely post the 'after' pictures once the project is complete.

The space is very small and to accommodate them now and in the future you need to allow all sorts of space, hand rails and storage. Years ago, in an older home, it was not unheard of to put the sink in the bedroom itself. In this case it may be an option and will allow them both to use the fixtures at one time giving more room for a tub/shower combo.

Hello fkoor, I have a couple of questions for you. I am having a hard time seeing where the window ends. Is there a mirror below it? If so, is the blind fully covering the window? Perhaps you could raise the blind so we can see the window itself. Also, what is the dark area between the vanity and tub? Is that a working vent? Thanks!

we have a high awning style window in our shower that opens. are you allowed to change the window to one that is made of the right materials (not wood...)?

I would consult with a design person who specializes with elderly renovations. They will look at space and help you envision the challenges with possible future walkers, commodes, shower friendly with grips and seating etc.That window may have to go.

are you considering putting the shower head on the right wall.... using the area where the sink is for the shower... and moving the sink to the right of the shower?

Oh my gosh!! I think I just figured out what you meant by painted window!! LOL! That isn't a blind, the actual glass is painted! Could you remove the curtains and post a photo?

Is it possible for you to swap the positions of the toilet and the sink?

@Design Distinctions: The top part of the window (that opens out) has been painted white. The bottom part of the window has been replaced with a mirror the size of the window. The white 'curtain' is actually illustrating the full drop of the window. I will post a pic as soon as I can,

@nnigrt: I was considering using the area where the tub (on the right) is for the shower, moving the wash basin to the left wall and moving the toilet more to the right (in the area of the current wash basin)

Unfortunately I can't move the window as it is an apartment block and we can't change anything on the exterior.

thats not surprising. i dont think the window is a bad shape/location for what you might want to do. but you'll need to have a contractor look at YOUR window to see if it is made of materials that could survive being in a shower.

Hi All,

Thanks for all your advice regarding my query. I just wanted to share with you some of the 'After' Pics.

We managed to get more space to work with by installing a sliding door to the bathroom.

In addition, we've also put in some blinds and a mirror above the floating basin.

They make teak benches on hinges that fold up. May be an option you can use.
